Any of you ever used one of those coolers that you plug into your cigarette lighter/power source in your car? We are thinking about buying one to take with us to MT, so we could take more food and not have to eat out so much.They are kind of spendy, $47 - $55 depending on the brand , but if you saved yourself from eating out a couple of times, it could pay for itself. Just wondering if anyone has ever used one and how they work. |

My target one has lasted the longest. Actually I've had two from target (one was actually stolen when the car was broke into! lol). But, we bought three from Coscto and all died with in about 3 times of using it! We use the one from target nearly every day for my pumped milk for the baby when we are just doing errands around town. I also keep things in there when I am out and about and buy something I wasn't expecting that needs in a fridge. |

My husband is a truck driver also and has had one for years. He also packs his own food from home. I think he bought the last one at Walmart. It's been a great investment for him.

My husband drives a truck and uses one everyday. He loves it. He can take GOOD food from home instead of eating fast food, AND it saves a lot of money. I think it's a great investment if you will use it quite a bit. The only drawback is that there isn't a ton of room in one. But if you pack carefully you can get quite a bit in there. He takes enough food for a few days in his.

I have one and think they are great! They work well especilly for long hot trips. These are coolers and not fridges.They do not heat up your car. I think they are a good investment if you like to travel. They do keep things cold if that is your concern. |

We usually carry bottled water so a day or two before we travel I put most of the water in the freezer and a few in the fridge. When I pack the cooler I put all the frozen ones in the bottom and the refrigerated ones on the top. They keep the cooler nice and cold and once you are ready to use them they have partially thawed and will thaw even more once you bring them out into the open air of the car.

I have never seen one that plugs in (what will they think of next??) I keep a medium size cooler in my van all the time and the kids and I throw an ice pack and drinks in there on a reg. basis. If I go up north I can bring home cold food that way too. If I forget to pack an ice pack I buy a box or two of frozen spinach and then put it in a zip bag when I get home and use it right away..we all love spinach. It stays frozen pretty well in a block like that. I bet butternut squash would too!!
We use a cooler and ice (frozen water bottles actually, so we can drink the water when it thaws) for the trip back to where we used to live in CAlif to visit family and friends (13 hours) and it does pretty well. Opened ice poured in sure dosn't last though.

Sherri- Our drive to our hometown in Wyoming is about 14 hours. We just use a cooler and we just buy new ice in Butte or Livingston when we stop for gas.
The way fridges work is by letting the Freon absorb the heat from the internal chest cavity and releases it to the outside air. So running a fridge in the car would heat it up a little more.

I'm not sure what you mean- but we need something that doesn't let stuff like yogurt etc. get warm on the way there. In the summer, ice never lasts all the way from home to the cabin. |

I have never heard of them- but a cooler with I would be about the same size and with out the heat being released into the car like a fridge would be- right?
