I love the Farmgirl Cookbook that Diane put together back in December and I am ready to do another one. This one will be a little different though. Here is the scoop:

Send to me:
Recipes(for grill or campfire), campfire songs, ghost stories, etc.

Please make sure all stories are original so I don't have to deal with copyright stuff.

I will edit and organize all of the information into a book form. I will do this as a Word document. When it is ready I will send anyone who is interested a copy of the file as an email attachement. You may then print it and bind it (staples or kinkos etc) as you would like. This will eliminate you paying for printing and shipping and will save me a lot of headache!

What do you think girls?

Email me your stuff! I am going to set a June 15th deadline for submissions so I can get this ready by July 1.

Did the cookbook ever happen? I would love to have everyones recipes and it looks like it may be on hold if Julie doesn't have email right now but come next spring I know I will be wanting some new campfire favorites;)

I just found your email, duh, through your web site! So I sent along a "few" recipes. I have some old books somewhere with camp songs and games in them but can't put my hands on them right now, I think they are maybe in Michigan. If you still are "open" when I get them I will send them.

Willow....

Here's an idea: Maybe if you could just list the name of the recipes you have already collected, then it might be easier for people to fill in the blanks....so to speak.

I will add more recipes as well. Does that sound ok?

I have gotten mostly desserts, a few main dish, 1 side dish, 2 snacks and 4 breakfast recipies. I need lots more of everything. I am really looking for recipies that people could make while they are camping. Basically everything you listed is the type of stuff I am looking for. Hearty meals that are fairly easy to prepare and transport to the campsite.

Can you tell us what categories you've received so far, and what you're still looking for?

I have lots of recipes from my Girl Scout leader days, but figured you've already received them, since they're pretty well-known.

For example, there are:

Trail Mix
- only about a hundred variations on this
- lots of other "totables" for hikes

Soups
- Campfire chili
- Nail soup
- Stews

Desserts
- Toasted marshmallows
- S'mores(do you have the s'mores recipe?)
- Pie-iron pies

Cooking in foil
- Veggies and Potatoes are good

Cooking in Zip-Loc bags
- Zip-loc omelette (Use at your own risk, some say they are toxic...)

cooking in cast-iron or dutch ovens (somebody already mentioned this)
- frying fish

Cooking on sticks or forks
- hot dogs

Dehydrated foods
- how to dry fruits and veggies and store them for use on the trail

Wild foods
- How to identify foods in the wild

Hope these are some thought-starters.

Julie,
I've emailed you the recipe for Dutch Oven Rhubarb Cake. I'm so glad I remembered to get a copy of it while I was at the pioneer village yesterday! I'll see if I can come up with anything else for the cookbook in the next few days...

I'm sorry I haven't been able to get my hands on that rhubarb cake recipe yet. I should have it by Wednesday, and hopefully I'll come up with at least one other campfire recipe as well. I love cooking over an open fire. It feels so pleasantly primitive. :)

I would have contributed, but..I have not ever cooked over an open fire.. in fact I have never even camped outdoors/slept in a tent outside that I know of(yikes...maybe will have to be something that I try to do soon)...and as far as grilling goes I haven't done that either...unless you count my George Foreman grill..ha
so I'm sorry that I wasn't able to contribute. I think it is a good idea though and I even thought surely I could find something that could be cooked outdoors.

Maybe this wasn't as popular of an idea as I thought it would be. I have only collected 6 recipes! I hate to abandon the project but I need some more help ladies!

How about an old-fashioned recipe to be made in a Dutch oven over an open fire? My sister and I had our first experience as interpreters at a living history museum the other day, and she made a delectable rhubarb cake, baking it to perfection over hot coals outside an 1820's cabin. If I can get my hands on the recipe next week, I'll be sure to send it on to you for the cookbook, Julie!
