Hubby and I recently spent some quality time camping on World Heritage listed Fraser Island (a great place to earn my Disconnect to Reconnect badge). Sculpted from wind, sand and surf, the striking blue freshwater lakes, crystalline creeks, giant sand dunes and lush rainforests of this gigantic sandbar form an enigmatic island paradise unlike anywhere else. Created over hundreds of thousands of years from sand drifting off the east coast of mainland Australia, Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world (measuring 120km by 15km), and is the only known place where rainforest grows on sand. Seventy-Five Mile Beach (or 75 Mile Beach) is the sand highway that runs the length of Fraser Island, and the usual road rules apply. It also serves as the air strip, so you do need to watch out for aircraft landing.
We enjoyed some beautiful hikes, went swimming & boogie boarding in the crystal clear Eli Creek, explored the rotting hulk of the Maheno, a former passenger liner which was blown ashore by a cyclone in 1935, and set up our tent on the beach behind the sand dunes.

Cindy, I love it....great getaway, peaceful and bonding. Plus the history of the sand island and rainforest growth is fascinating! Nature adapts and its quite remarkable isnt it? Thanks for sharing! I learned something new and interesting and got a few more wrinkles in my brain!!

Gorgeous photos, Cindy! We, too, are guilty of taking our own backyard for granted. People come from all over to visit central oregon and enjoy all our outdoor activities. We need to get out more!

Cindy,, so true.. my hubby and I like to take drives,, or what we call, "getting lost".. we end up in places we had no idea was so near us..
Even in Spokane, Washington,,, we get off the beaten path and discover the cutest neighborhoods. We still limit our contact in town but we make notes of place to go back to after the pandemic is behind us...

The nice thing about living on a shy 14 plot,, is we can camp out ,,, even in the hay field if we want! lol!

Absolutely Grace! I would happily adopt you and take you glamping on Fraser Island. I guess the one positive to COVID and the shut down of international flights is that hubby and I have been exploring more of our own backyard. Australia does have a lot of amazing places to explore and sometimes we forget to appreciate what we have at home.
