good morning from Alaska, the snow has moved in and the critters have moved out. Late last night we circled our property only to hear three great horned owls positioned on three corners. I can't tell you what a beautiful night it was. It was a chorus of who who whos. One was a deep voice, one lighter and then another far away. One was backlit so that you could see its shape. The winds came overnight so I'm sure they're tucked away somewhere, but oh! the sound of owls in winter. It is snowing now, and winter has settled in here.

We have a little owl in NZ called the Morepork. So named because its call sounds like "more pork"! There is one that calls near us every few evenings. On a still night usually - it makes a very haunting noise - this is a link to what they sound like:

Bluewren - your nephew might be interested in some of the birds on this website - in particular the Harrier Hawk! We went on holiday a couple of weeks ago and saw dozens of them, one was devouring a recently run-over possum - yuk!

If anyone ever gets a photo/picture of an owl, eagle, hawk or falcon, esp. a peregrine falcon, would you please send me a copy? I have an 9 y.o. nephew who is NUTS about birds of prey, esp. falcons and owls and I rarely get a decent shot of the owls in our backyard. Drew would be forever thrilled with one!

I love owls, they're my favorite birds! I have seen a few different kinds around here, but by far my favorite was a tiny little saw whet owl by the creek last summer. I didn't know that owls came that tiny! I love sitting outside in the summer and listening to them.
I have a small collection of owl ornaments that my dd started for me.
Does anyone build owl boxes?

We also have great horned owls here-they get very active in Jan. & Feb. We also have teeny little screech owls. This past summer when we went upstairs to go to bed, there was one perched on the window sill! I usually don't get to see them that close up!

We have a pair of great horned owls in our front yard and a barn owl in our back yard... They are really active - esp. the barn owl during the day. (She's hunting baby birds, I think.)

And this is in the city in Dallas!
