Every year we have camped, dh has just put a carton of eggs in the cooler. This year, I am going to crack the eggs, whisk them, and pour them into glass, air tight jars, and put them into the cooler. It should be much easier and less space in the cooler. We cook all of our food over the campfire.

It's so nice to pull items out of my garden to take with us - fresh green peppers, onion, tomatoes, potatoes, squash, and herbs to flavor it all with. Yum! I'm just missing a homemade loaf of bread. We're even taking homemade jelly in case it rains and we can't cook over the fire. The kids are asking to make homemade peanut butter again. I don't think we have time today.

I am considering buying 2 pie pans to make clothespin bread over the campfire too. I don't have any tin pie pans.

It's been a huge help to pack them that way. Especially the cheese. Water from the cooler doesn't get in them.

Oh, man!!! Slaps head..."I could have had a V-8". All those camping trips when I could have packed eggs like that. And used glass jars for other things. At least I can start doing this now for our road trips! Thanks for sharing!

I should have explained more thoroughly- friend cracks the eggs into the inside tube of the Tupperware rolling pin. that way they are protected also!

Penny,
I put several items in recycled glass peanut butter jars - organic butter, cheese, meat slices, and other items. They don't get wet inside the jars, when I put them in our cooler of ice.

As for the eggs, we crack them now, and they stay whole until we get them out to cook.

Break all the eggs you need into a plastic wide-mouth thermos jug. You don't have to baby them, just keep the container cool. The egg yolks wont break, they won't even seperate from their own whites. We've packed them this way on a pack-horse (in a panniard) and they hold up perfectly. When you're ready to cook, just pour the eggs out -- use a spoon to control how many.

I'm so glad I took them in a jar this time. It saved space in the cooler and it was so much easier to make breakfast over the campfire.

I agree! I went on a camping trip in college and one of the guides had steak and eggs in the morning. He had put his in a spare water bottle. Very clever!! And you have a water tight bag or container- you can submerge them in a stream or something at night to keep them "refrigerated"

I don't even whisk them..then you can pour them out into a skillet and do fried eggs. Very few will break. I just crack them into a pint jar and like you said..put them in the cooler. You can put alot into a pint jar.
