I'm leaving tomorrow for a week-long camping trip. I haven't used my tent in about 3 years, so I got out it out to make sure everything was ok. Yikes! The elastic that runs inside all the poles has stretched out and totally lost its elasticity. I see that places like Gander Mtn sell tent pole replacement kits for 9.99. Is that what I need? I don't really want to replace the poles...they work really well and fit perfectly (the tent is a Marmot Sanctum). Does anyone know whether it's possible to buy just the elastic by the roll and restring the poles? Does Joanns carry elastic of the right strength?

Great poat, Amie,
It is a good idea to always check out your gear before any trip, be it tent, sleeping bags, propane tank, etc.... nothing worse then setting up camp and not being able to or find items worn out or pieces missing...
trust me,,, I know!
I was Glamping with a whole heard of trailer divas...and it was my groups turn to cook, go figure the 3 of us went tt turn on our propane stoves...duh! none of us had any propane in out tanks! Ackward! especially since I was the Camp Hostess! lol! Now I check to make sure I never run out of propane. !lol!

I never even thought about that happening. We're taking a couple of tents with us on our next trip. We have too many people coming for them to stay in the trailer with us. I will get the tents out and see how they're holding up.

Have a great trip.

Well, I found round elastic cord at Joanns that appears to be almost the same size as what was in the poles. Now I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it's sturdy enough to last for a week! If sewers use it for swimwear and undergarments, it's got to have some staying power, right?

I learned later from Marmot customer service (they weren't answering the phones, so I wasn't sure if I was going to hear anything back in response to the message I left before I had to leave) that I could have tried a store like REI or EMS and gotten the poles restrung there. But I don't know if there's a store in my area that offers that service.

I guess this is a lesson learned. I never even thought about that elastic going bad after a few years. But apparently it's routine maintenance that needs to be done every so often.
