I posted in Herbal Wisdom also, but wanted to ask here as well. Do any of you have a recipe for a natural remedy (oils, soap, etc)that I can use to repel black flies (from biting us)? They are horrible this year.

I bought a bug bar from here: http://www.hardlotion.com/ Worked great at keeping the black flies and mosquitoes off of us while in Canada last week.

I found a solution to flies. I'm going to try it before I post about it. This is not a spray.

I replied on your other post also. My cousin warned us about the black flys as we were planning to go to Kelley Island in Ohio and she said they used vinegar mixed with some water in a spray bottle and it worked great! She said you do have to apply it often but at least it worked!

Thanks. I put on my Burt's Bee's bug oils, and the flies actually drew blood. Grrrr. I want to claim my porch back. Ugh.

I've heard about Listerine also - never tried it though.

I have heard but not tried it yet that if you take plain old Listerine in a spray bottle and spray the area outside where you will be hanging out that it keeps all flying biting bugs away for up to a week (as long as it doesnt seriously rain in that time) We havent had the mosquitoes out yet to try it.
