Has anybody tried this? It's in her first book in the hiking/outdoors section. It's based on quinoa and sounds really good.

I pack in on horses several times a year and am looking for different freeze-dried foods for weight purposes and because I like them. So I have tried Mountain House, Backpacker's Pantry, Alpinaire and Enertia. Some meals are better than others. MJ's plan looked interesting and I wanted to try it.

I went to our local health food/organic store and priced approximately what it would cost me. It was over $100. Does that price seem right?

And if you followed the plan, how was it? Did you like it? Was it easy to prepare? What about leftovers (if any)? Were there particular spice mixes you preferred?

I made one of the spice mixes in the book and ate it with quinoa and it was good. I wasn't on the trail though, just curious to try it. I can't remember now what spice mix it was. I also dehydrated some cottage cheese (which I normally don't eat) and it was great.

I tried the regular chili last night. It wasn't bad. I did add some hamburger meat to it though lol. However, I'm used to a much spicier chili. So that may have been why, I wasn't totally fond if it. But I did like it. It would be excellent for backpacking and lunchs at work though. :)

Thanks, Alee. I've read several of your posts in other categories about how much your family enjoys MJ's foods.

But the meal plan I am talking about is in MJ's Outpost book and it's called "7-day Backpacking Meal Plan". (pg.173)

I've tried a couple of the packages like you mention that happened to come in a sampler that I ordered. I really like the orange-walnut (?) scones. I'm considering ordering some in bulk.

I LOVE MaryJane's foods!! I usually supplement a little bit when at home but they are very filling and would be great by themselves on the trail! My favorites are Bare Burrito, Jambalaya, All of the soups, the Chili Mac is AMAZING, Scones (you can make them on a camp fire!), and all the bean dishes like Black Beans and rice. They are all so good, it's hard to decide!

Also there are two other bonuses. You can either buy in the bulk which gives you a better value for your dollars, or you can buy the pouches which only require you to pour in hot water and wait! A great benefit of the pouches are that they can be burned which reduces food smells= less likelihood of predators like bears or cougars being drawn to your campsite.
