I have been looking for a little Shasta to renovate. I don't know that much about them. Is this a fair price or should I pass?

A couple of quick things,,, from the pic I see what appears to be water damage to the back, right side... so that tells me, there is probably more. Also, the in the picture the lower section looks to be a different piece of wood.
Bring a flate head screw driver & a flashlight with you...look at the underside of the trailer, use your screwdriver to 'poke' around on the underside to check for rot.
Also look inside all the cabinets and under/behind the bed/sofa and the dinette.
If the floor does not feel solid(squish) you will have issues.
And use your nose...sniff...if you smell anything that might smell like mildew/mold...then there is rot.
If the seller has a candle going or you smell airfreshner the seller is trying to hide something and last but not least, don't be pressured or 'talked into buyng cus it's a sought after trailer, collectable etc....
Shasta's were common affordable trailers in their day, but they have a fun following and lots of different cute models... I hope to ad one to my mini collection....
I hope you have fun in your search of that perfect little trailer....
Oh and as for the price,,, a decent vintage un-restored trailer should go for around $800 to $1200,, if it is in really good shape expect to pay a lot more.
Also, when you buy your trailer, besure to make sure the wheels have been packed( greased)or get it done asap... and make sure the tires are in good shape....even if they look good, but are old, invest in new tires...trust me it is a small price to pay to keep from having to sweep up the remnants of a trashed trailer because the tire blew & the trialer went into a sway.

I have bought two vintage trailers, 1968 Frolics. The first one was so rotted we had to tear it completely down and just use it for parts. The second one was better, but still needed total restoration. We sold the parts and the trailer to Kampercat. There is a farmgirl selling a canned ham trailer on this forum somewhere. I will try to find it.
You will have to get the wheel bearings replaced first. There is some information on restoring old trailers in the Sisters on the Fly book. Good luck!

I was thinking I would offer 800 then hopefully they would meet in the middle at 1000. I know it will be a work in progress, but how fun is that?!

When you look it over check the ceiling to be sure it does not sag anywhere, also look under the trailer to be sure joints do not look to be rotting. Feel the floor with your feet/body weight well for any sagging (this can change with temp changes) Look down the sides of the trailer from the outside for any bowing which could mean water has gone beneath the siding and causing rot behind the metal skin. Really feel and check the corners inside the trailer, especially in cupboards etc. If this all feels good to you then i would try to negotiate him down to 800-1000. Most folks will price a few hundred higher to negotiate anyways. I just sold my little 66 aloha and miss it but love the vintage trailers!

I would buy it at that price but I might try to negotiate down a little. Maybe offer $1000? But I don't have any experience either. It just sounds like a good deal.
