Hi all,
Any suggestions for keeping my 3-month old warm at nighttime while camping at a state park? We'll have a lean-to and I was planning to put him in a cozily lined laundry basket. I'm planning to sleep on a cot and there isn't room for us both on there. Alternately, I might make a bed of blankets and sleep with him on the floor of the lean-to. I'm worried about making sure he's warm enough if I do the laundry basket idea.
Suggestions?

we went tent camping with our little girl when she was three months in Oct in the mountains. I could see my breath in the morning, which is pretty cold for southern california. and we always sleep on the floor in the tent, we've found that cots are actually really cold because there is air underneath you instead of the warn ground. at any rate, my husand and i always zip our sleeping bags together, put one extra sleeping bag and a comforter (or two!) underneath us because it is sooo compfy. so, we did the same ol thing and put our little one between us. we had her pretty bundled up too. and she did great! I didn't sleep too soundly though cause i kept checking on her to make sure neither my husband or i had covered her in our sleep. but, there was no reason to worry, it worked out great! and she slept like a rock since she was between us.
it's a challenge at times, camping with such a wee one, but lots of fun. best of luck to you! and take lots of pictures because the challenges mean you have lots of boasting right ;P

I always love wool, sheepskins to sleep on top of or as a bed pad. A wool vest for a toddler is the best for outdoor warmth I've found.They wear it to bed too.Of course a wool hat or those cotton pilot caps from Hannah Andersen catalog,they stay on really well.I always have worked outdoors year round w? my three kids.We also love Uggs or some not china made version.Tried wool socks but not that successful. |

Unless that air mattress has a cover on it, I wouldn't but the baby on that. Those mattresses can conduct the cold right on up through them. Once the air in the mattress gets chilled, so does the mattress. You can warm up the top of the mattress but you won't be able to warm up all the air, so it will stay chilled. You need something between you and that mattress to help with blocking that like a heavy blanket or pad. I had forgotten how cold they can be till we camped a few weeks ago. It got down fairly chilly (upper 40s) and our bags are great...but we needed just a little something extra for that chilly air mattress I had picked up for the trip. Remember the air will get moist at night as well. I would dress your babe in the same kinds of warm stuff you would at home. The sleep sack is a great idea and don't forget to cover that little head! And don't forget to consider you may need to get through all those layers for a diaper change! Have a great time. |

The air mattress is a really great idea.
But, don't get the baby too warm! Here's a funny story I've heard like a million times:
My mom and dad took me with them camping when I was about 6 months old. Mom was worried about me being cold, so she got me all bundled up.
During the night I woke them up screaming and crying. Mom picked me up, and I was all sweaty and hot. TOO WARM!

If i were you i would put enough clothes on the baby that he is warm, use your best judgement. And instead of sleeping on the ground i would sleep on an air mattress this way the cold from the ground will be far enough away to help baby stay warmer. Put baby in with you and i would say you should be set

You can put a onesie on him and some cotton pants then bundle him in footed p.j.s over that. If it's really cold you can even add a sleep sack over all of that.
I always worry too much about my babies camping so they usually just end up in the sleeping bag with me, on the ground. I may not sleep too well that night but at least they're not cold! :)

don't forget bug netting for your little one, and as a general rule, if your are warm enough with the same weight clothing on , he will be too, and if you are cool enough with the same weight clothing on, so is he.

Thanks! I don't have one of those, but maybe I can look for a second hand one this week.
I'm not sure of the temperature but it's usually pretty chilly at night--I sleep in a down sleeping bag and generally have it up over my head! I might just do the bed-on-the-floor thing and cuddle him close to me. Although he's such a little heat pump, I'll probably make him overheat!

I agree one of those zip up fleece blanket sleeper sacks always kept Nora nice and warm and if you can put a hat on that maybe velcros underneath then you baby should be nice and cozy.
