Nothing says "Up North" like a sign with a giant pike on it.

Love this sign.

The "Mighty Mac."

My husband on the ferry to the Island.

The Grand Hotel. (We stayed at the Iroquois.)

The view from our room.

My husband inside the Devil's Kitchen.

The view from the Pontiac Trail.

Lillies of the Valley - my favorite flower!

I was lucky to get this shot of a monarch butterfly on our hike.

Jessie,
Love the Iroquois.
The best thing about staying on the island for me is hearing the horses at night clip clopping along the streets

LOL about your buns! I bet the $10 charge is for the cost of replacing the worn carpet from all the foot traffic! HA! But seriously, there better be a roller coaster ride included for that price. LOL!

Nikki, can you believe they charge you $10 to go inside if you aren't a hotel guest!?! Fortunately, walking around the grounds - which are beautiful themselves - is free. We saw sign about having to pay to go inside, and we kept our buns outside on the porch!

Oh, Jessie! How wonderful! I love the view from your hotel! Beautiful! OH, I want to go to Mackinac for the Lilac Festival and see the Grand Hotel. I hope they let people who are not staying there tour the hotel and grounds because I know that I will definitely NOT be paying over $300 a night to stay anywhere! LOL!

My parents honeymooned at the Grand Hotel, too, back in 1974. My dad says everybody told him he was crazy to spend $99 a night on a hotel room. They go up to a "murder mystery" weekend every year in October, and now it's over $300 a night!
I really liked the hotel we stayed at (the Hotel Iroquois on Windemere Point). Much smaller than the Grand - only 40 rooms - but it was lovely, service was fantastic, and I liked the cozy environment.

Thanks sooo much for the memories! That's where we went on our senior trip when I went to Interlochen Arts Academy (they still go to the island, though I wonder how it's changed?) I always think I'd like to take Justin there because it was such a wonderful experience. Maybe when Violet is a little older.

Oh, the Grand Hotel...I was SOOO into the movie somewhere in time when we went, and I remember sitting on that porch for hours, being wistfully romantic (like a true 17 year old girl!).

The day we took the ferry was a terrible one, though, high waves, wind and rain...there were a couple of times I thought we were going to go overboard!

What a GREAT trip Jesse!!! Took the boys a couple years ago to the island. Sure has changed from when I was a kid. So busy, busy, busy. Looks like you had some great weather! What a great view. Must have been truly wonderful waking up to that!

A teacher friend of mine took a group of our special needs kids up as a school trip a few years back. They stayed at the Grand Hotel. The manager worked it out for each of the students to have some "work" time in the hotel with a mentor there. They were so COOL with our students. (all of whom had some cognitive delays) The students "worked" in the laundry, the stable, the kitchen and dining area, and the grounds. They even went to dinner in the big dining room and of course, had to "dress" for dinner. (They had practiced their dining manners several times before leaving) It was certainly a trip none of them would forget.

Thanks for the memories Jesse! My husband and I had stayed for a weekend at Mackinac 7 years ago for our honeymoon. We drove around Lake Michigan in early October. It was gorgeous, we stayed at "The Mission Point" hotel. We want to go back again when our little boy is a bit older.
