We just got a camper and this will be all new to me. I have camped once about 13 yrs ago for one night. I am excited! I have some receipes that the people we purchased the camper from told me about but would love more. I still remember her telling me about the bacon and coffee smell throughout the campsite. I will be the one that wants to go when the air gets a little crisp and you can sit by the fire.

I will let you know when we get back my our first outting. Let me hear how your goes as well with the tent and all. Sounds like fun. We bought ours camper last week and suppose to go bring it home this weekend. Its a three hour drive - bought it in north Alabama. Then we will get to work getting it all ready. Hope to make lots of memories. I also do scrapbooking so this will be a fun one to capture.

Oh, Susie, I am so glad that your husband is determined to be a good, manly role model for your grandson! Bestowing a love of the outdoors and taking him there as much as possible would be an immeasurable gift that y'all could give him.

Yes, I have cooked over a fire pit with sort of metal platform to hold the dutch oven over the coals. I, too, would have liked to have a cast iron skillet, but the bacon cooked up fine in the dutch oven. A table would be a really big help, also. LOL! I have done some bare bones cooking outside, let me tell you!

We are planning on doing real camping with a tent in a few weeks and maybe I will have some more advice on "what NOT to do" when we get back! But I think that anything that you attempt outside will end up being fun and memorable. So go for it! And then tell us all about it. Ha!

Hi Nikki, Dahlonega is beautiful but its been a long time since we have been. I would love to go where it has little to no bugs for sure. I think that fall would be the best. My grandson will be three in August and we want him to go camping alot with us. My hubby is the main man model in his life and he wants to do things with him as much as possible. I hope to do some cooking on the fire. I have had one person tell me to make sure I take a skillet and a small table to set up so we can do bacon and stuff outside. Any suggestions will help me as I am so new at this. Thanks for your info and I will appreciate anything you can pass on to me. Have a great day!

Susie, we have some friends who go camping for several weeks at a time in Dahlonega, Georgia. That seems like it would be an awesome place to go. Low humidity and not a lot of bugs. Of course, we went in late October, so that might have been why. Have you ever been there? We went one year without the kids and now I want to take them so that they can pick apples in the fall, see the goldmine and pan for gold, and walk around the square. We are going to camp, for sure!

What kind of recipes were you wanting? Are you going to be cooking over a fire with cast iron? I have a little experience with that, but not really recipes per say. We have some pie irons that we use a lot. I could definitely give you some tips on what NOT to do with them. HA!
