Wowwheee! I just got my prize from Nadine! This farmgirl went overboard! I got 4 beautiful cards, a beautiful 8x10 picture and some stamps with a old car on them! I love everything! Thank you, thank you! I really enjoyed your letter/card too! Your photography is so beautiful that I'm not sure if I can part with any of the cards! They just might have to go in picture frames instead! I'm so glad your mystery shrub was identified too!

Everyone should check out Nadine's blog, she has some gorgeous photographs for sale!

A surprised & happy,
Dawn in IL

Nadine, I am glad that you solved the mystery! We have something like that here that people tell me is called a sweet olive bush; although, it can reach the height of a tree. The scent is so beautiful that it makes me want to cry. I don't know why. Maybe because I think that heaven MUST smell like that.

Dear Farm Girls!!!!! Thank you for your help! I have two winners in the contest!! I am giving the prize to Dawn in Il for recommending I email the Morton Arboretum, who correctly identifed the shrub as "eleangus umbellata" or also calld "autumn olive". I will also send the person who answered my question at the arboretum a prize. You have all been so wonderful and this has been so much fun, and now I know so much about this plant including the fact that it was originally from China, is now becomming a invasive species and that it's fruit has more anti-oxidants in it than tomatoes. The fruit is high in protein, and the seeds and flowers can be used to treat pulmonary infections.( for more info go to http://pick4.pick.uga.edu/mp/20q?search=Elaeagnus+umbellata or http://www.issg.org/database/species/ecology.asp?si=262&fr=1&sts=sss). Thank you all for participating. This was educational and fun. Nadine

Thank Everyone for helping, I emailed the Morton Arboretum, and sent them a picture, maybe they will be able to help, as they should know all the Illinois plants and shrubs.

How about going back and snip off a branch and taking it to a nursery or just show them the picture. MB

What about flowering almond? I can't remember what it looks like exactly but I do remember it was very delicate.

Nadine, you could E-mail the picture to either the Chicago Botanical Garden or the Morton Arboretum. They will identify it for you. If they do, it's your choice if you want to send them the prize!

Joanna, I looked up an enlarged photo of the Carolina silver bell on the internet, and unfortunately, that's not it. The flowers of my mystery plant are more trumpet like. Thanks for visiting my blog!!

Marybeth, I looked up a large picture of th oso berry and the deutzia on the internet and that's not it. It does not have the seregated leaf of the deutzia and the flowers are more like a miniture trumpet with a star shape on the end so that ruled out the oso berry. I am grateful for your help!!!

Sorry Alee, and Aunt Pammy. It is not a Clerodendrum trichotomum nor a "mock orange". The mock orange flowers are much bigger than these, and this has white flowers and more silver-green leaves than the clerodendrum trichotmum, but thanks for trying to help me!!!!!
