I can't do that on-the-ground-thing. But...I have a little tiny cot and then I put in a foam core, and then my bag. Works pretty well. But with my arthritis getting down there and then back up again.... Good thing I'm inside the tent where no one can witness!

About 20 years ago, I was camping in Colorado & slept in my Jeep... pretty cramped, but I was young & limber... I doubt I could do it now... I set up my pup tent at the campsite, just to have something to reserve my spot if I left for a while to go fishing or whatever... these days, I have a larger tent & an air mattress... a bit more comfortable, but still camping out of my car...

Most of the trips I've taken in my adult life have involved sleeping in the car, usually at rest areas. I love the freedom of being able to stop whenever you need to, and make crazy detours without any obligation to be somewhere by check-in time.

But I don't think I would do that if I was traveling alone.

I've also done the camping OUT of my car, pitching a tent at a different campground every night. It's kind of a hassle to have that obligation to be there on the right day, at the right time. But it's probably safer to be somewhere around other people and with supervision.

Are you camping IN your car or OUT of your car?

YEARS ago I had the bottom back seat out of my Subaru so I could put the back seat down and sleep in the back. So that was IN my car. Mostly I've camped OUT of my car -- taken the tent, etc., out and set up camp at a campgroud.

Motels are SO expensive these days. My daughter and I do a lot of camping (OUT of the car) but even campground are expensive, especially those in Canada where we seem to end up these days.

Have fun and be safe! Karin

The only thing about rest stops is that here in Wyoming/Montana we have had a few gruesome crimes- murders and rapes and such at rest stops so please just be careful. In the wide open spaces where there is less traffic it means more time to do bad things sometimes and less possibilities of witnesses.

I've slept in my car before and never had any problems. Rest areas (over by the big trucks & under the light), hospital parking lot (long nights while my pa was sick), and so on. Even lived out of my car a bit for a summer.... I've also camped alone using a tent. Some campgrounds will not let you just pull in, pay for a site and then sleep in the car. Make sure first before shelling out the money to stay the night. Invest in a can of pepper spray and a whistle. You could even get one of those air horns. I've also taken the bus from Kzoo to San Diego (4 days 3 nights) and the train from Kzoo to Dallas (27 hours) I felt less safe on those trips and trying to sleep than when I was in my car. (especially when sitting next to some unsavory types) IL to MT sounds like a hoot.

I would park at a WalMart or some place open 24/7 then at least you have people around.

Hi Lisa- I had some friends that did it. Just be safe and try and park in known places like KOA's or other campgrounds. Please don't park and sleep at rest stops unless absolutely necessary!
