On New Year's Day we took a family road trip out to a state park about 1.5 hours from the house. Leisurely drive. The park we were visiting is on the Illinois River and has a dam. The bald eagles congregate there to fish. Now, I know many of you see eagles on a daily basis. But us city girls need to drive to see them.

We sat along the river watching the eagles "fish". There must have been 20 of them! Incredible sight! My girls were so excited! The numbers seem to be increasing each year. Then overhead came a heron! We think he was lost - they usually migrate out of the area much earlier in the season.

Our next stop was another state park that has 2 buffalo. We love to stop and see them. Marvel at their size. Imagine what our world was like when they roamed free.

Leaving that park, we turn the corner and see a field filled with wild turkeys!

We had such a wonderful day. A great way to start off our New Year - with lots of nature. Even if it was seen from the truck windows and little spurts out into the cold! Makes me crave spring all the more....
