I've recently come across the website of Reel Women Fly Shop... they are located in Victor, Idaho, & offer guided fishing trips & fly fishing schools, including a basic fly fishing class for women only... anybody familiar with them?.. I'm considering signing up for one of the basic classes next summer... their website is at http://www.reel-women.com...

Jes - love your blog - I read about your weekend in NY - my husband and I had one of those a couple of years ago - we loved SOHO, Little Italy, Chinatown, etc. And you mentioned Anthropologie - I have one nearby - my sister and I love that place and it's great for gifts. I've tried fly-fishing a little. My husband and sons have done it more and I love to watch, when I'm not trying it myself. They've fished in the mountains of Georgia - Hi, Lissa! - and in Frying Pan River, in Aspen, as well as a lake an hour north of home. One of our favorite hangouts is Orvis...

I do have a bunch of old farm home photos glazed in snow, making the sled for an authentic touch of chill? LOL Do you have any fish/moose heads mounted?

Gliding along feeling the ocean swells is sweet. Do you troll as you paddle? Ever caught a shark on your striper? See any osprey dive fishing too?

Duck hunting season started here. Gotta be noisy on the lagoon for the next month.

Holly....sounds like you had a FAB birthady all around!

Ellen....who says you can't do the lodge look in FLA?? I think it would be so cool to hang your sled over the fireplace!

Not much to report on the fishing front. We kayaked out of WISCASSET last week, with our striper rods of course, but nothing! Aw well...I just love the excersise and to be out there anyway!

Happy belated bday Holly! Swell presents to land a couple silvers!Myboys always wanted fishing trips for their birthdays!

In all my years fishing I've never been checked for my license? What about the rest of you? But sure enough you don't tote her along pow officer dan would happen up alongside asking. I leave mine in my tackle box.

I tie nymphs and we wet waded out into the lagoon in shorts and felt soled waders as the tide was coming in this morning.
The mullet look like they have picked up a bit on their fall migration here. We could see the snook flashing and jumping around them so I pitched out amongst the run as soon as the fly hit the pool head I got hit and hooked a 4lb snook and then reeled in a couple 2 lb trout. My girlfriend was using live shrimp she got a mangrovesnapper.

Jes
another maine gal wow and with a Lund and kayak impressive! An all girls fly class would be fun! My girlfriend and I fish together because wwe like to talk and fish and that's not something my hubby likes to do! LOL. I suspect you know you take more in from others then from your spouse about fishing especially ifn you paid for a class, my Daddy's buddies took me under their wing and taught me. I only keep the one we plan on eating the same night for dinner.
With your skills fixing furniture you could decorate a lodge! We have my old sled I told my husband we ought to hang over the fireplace it would be a hoot in Florida.
Do you have lobster traps too?

I got a stand of bamboo and cut cane poles for the canals, Jan, I use bread balls or fiddler crabs.Keep practicing with the reel! Took me years to get skills!

Thanks!! I did have a great birthday.
The day started off pretty hectic, due to some slight problems (I forgot my fishing license...). When we finally made it to the Quilcene (that's in northern WA, on the western side, it anyone's wondering), the tide was just starting to come back in, which was perfect timing to catch the fish who were trying to swim upstream. We could see Chum and Silvers swimming in this small stream, right at our feet. The whole point of the day was to try to get the fish to swim into the hook. Pretty ridiculous, but it seemed to work. Even with all of the fish, I caught two silvers, both in the span of 10 minutes. Dad caught the limit of four, with one really nice 15 pounder. We both tried to get me two more, but couldn't for the life of us, so by 6, we decided to clean and filet them there, so we made it home by 8. I'll see if I can't post my picture somewhere to show y'all!!
Then it was a small birthday party with my mom, dad, and nieces who were staying with their nana and pupu for the weekend. A sweet end to a sweet day!!

Good to know there are other women who fish!! I go with my dad and he's great company, but I'm usually the only woman out there, especially when we go "combat fishing" as Dad calls it (when it's shoulder to shoulder). I'm getting better, but I know what you mean Jan about getting lines tangled.
My favorite fishing story was my first trip two years ago. It was a combat fishing day, begun at dawn in Hoods Port in WA. We were right at the outlet of a river into the Sound were the Kings were stocked; you could see them boil right in front of you. I was out there with the old grizzled fisherman, feeling like a rookie because my dad would change the line every time it broke. The funny part was that I caught like fish that day and none of the other guys were getting even hits. One older gent finally asked, "Hey, you gonna catch all the fish." I responded back with, "I don't know, you want some?" He didn't look very happy about that, but Dad thought it was hysterical.
We're having another escapade tomorrow, and it just happens to be my birthday, so I'm sure we'll have fun. We're going down to the Quilcene, if anyone in WA knows where that is. I guess the river is loaded.
Happy Fishing!!

I fish every now and then with my friend in his pond on his farm. He gave me a pole to use and I promptly got the line hopelessly tangled up. I guess I was reeling in the line backwards. He then promptly handed me the cane pole that he keeps for his 6yr old grandson to use. I think I should be offended! I did teach him however, that you can catch fish with whole kernel corn on the hook instead of worms. If they have the choice, they'll go for the worms first, but he was surprised that I caught some with my corn. It will be awhile though until I get my "big girl" pole back.

OH how I love this forum!

ELLEN....I own my own breathable waders, fly rod, spinning reel...etc.! We own a 17 ft. LUND fishing boat. We take it in frsh and saltwater. We fish for salmon, stripers, trout & bluefish. Yes, we icefish, though I do find myself doing that less and less. (would rather stay home and craft in the winter!)

Our living room resembles a small lodge! We display antique lures & other fishing goodies....creels, pack baskets, vintage bamboo fly rods, decoys, old signs etc.

I have been fly fishing in Alaska! This is the first and only time I've ever caught a salmon on my fly rod! I can go to LL Bean to take a class....(I really need to do this)...but my Husband can't imagine why I would! He is a registered Maine Guide. He just doesn't understand that taking a "women's only" class would benefit me more at this point. He just wants to be my fishing mentor! hehe.

ROBIN...my new Maine friend....I have the Fly Rod Crosby book! (love it!) I am addicted to kayaking! We are trying to plan overnight stays next year! The challenge will be to pack as little as possible...(we are GIRLS afterall) on to our kayaks and island hop. We have had the most fun discussing how we can still make gourmet recipes over a campfire! We have actually come up with some pretty good ideas!

This past Sunday we went trolling for Salmon at Lake St. George. We stayed through 2 downpours....but we caught 'em. We very rarely keep a fish.

Tonight we are going on a 1.2 mile hike, and we will flyfish, or cast for Striper. I would like to take one home and cook it on the grill...striper is wonderful!

*PHEW* I guess I had a lot to say! It is just so nice to discuss "fishing" with girls. There is not a day that doesn't go by that fishing isn't talked about in this house...but it's all man talk!

I am excited about our little hike tonight, and I'll be sure to report in!

Get your own pole and go lite. The lite ones are easier on the arms and you can fish longer and enjoy it more! If turns not for you ya got your daughter?

You have the most gorgeous photos! How do you get your own website? Wow so cool!

My son is in Casco...Camp Laurel South sounds like a hoi poloi place and not like camp to me.They don't even have bug juice ha! He is teaching rock climbing skills and ropes courses then takes kids to who knows where.

You have an OLD Town! Wow...too cool. Do you have a dock on the lake? Ever been ice fishing? In my old age I have taken to sailing. Letting the wind do the work! It is like white water taking out the sunfish through the surf! I got over o not me going to clean fish/crab/shrimp fast because my hubby took a job where he was gone 3 days a week leaving me home with the boys bringing back their catches.

Hi Ellen,

I hope your son's enjoying his summer here! What part of Maine is he in? There are summer camps not too far from me. Has he seen moose yet? If not, and he has a day off and isn't too far away, I'd be happy to show him where to go. http://www.thymeforewe.com/baxter_state_park1.html and a link to page 2. We went to Baxter a few weeks ago. Once we get off the farm we see quite a few moose. Most of them are out in the spring when blackflies chase them out of the woods, again in the fall, and in winter when they come to the road for salt (used to melt ice). They spend most of their time in the woods out of sight. When we had horses there was a large bull that tore down fencing almost nightly to come stare at one of the mares. He was a big pain. Without the horses and with the farmcollies they keep their distance. I haven't had one too close to the house in years. I do find their tracks in the woods on our property though.

I haven't been on the Allagash yet but will in May. My daughter attends a very small school. There are about 40 kids from kindergarten through eighth grade. Each year the seventh and eighth graders go on a three-day, 30 mile canoe trip on the Allagash. They camp and fish and hit the white waters. I can't wait! The river is still clean and beautiful. I'm a kayaker but am going to have to learn to be comfortable in a canoe before the trip. I've been in only one canoe - mine. It's an old, wide, steady Old Town that I love. http://thymeforewe.com/taykayakclose.jpg This is my youngest daughter and the kayak she bought herself last summer. I have one but am not sure what it is. There's no name on it. It's a non-descript blue, narrow kayak that makes me a little nervous. My fil bought it, couldn't use it for what he intended, and gave it to me. I haven't paddled a river yet. We have a cabin on a lake and have a lot of lakes around us. Next year will be my first trip out on moving water. My husband ocean kayaked years ago and loved it. He grew up on the coast lobstering and digging marine worms. He's comfortable on the ocean. I'm still not.

hmmmm. I don't know how heavy the pole is. It's an Orvis that belongs to my husband. If I decide I like this I'm going to get my own. I do talk to myself while I'm casting! lol It's a good thing I'm learning in my own pond without witnesses or out on the dock at the lake out of earshot. I'm using wet flies now.

I'd rather not take anything with much size to it off a hook but I will. If Taylor's best friend is here we gladly let her do it! I've become very good at smiling sweetly while saying, "Steeeeeeve.........." and swinging my bigger fish his way. It worked before I was married too. "Daaaaaadddddd....." =) Now that I'm fishing with daughters and their female friends there's nobody to smile at! My sister will catch a fish, take it off, bonk it on the nose to kill it, gut it and cook it. I'd rather skip everything after catching it up to the cooking part. I've never gutted a fish and don't intend to start any time soon. Once I land a nice salmon on the lake I'm going to do it myself. I want the whole experience so I guess I'll wiggle and squirm my way through it!

hi Robin!
My son is working in Maine as a camp counselor for the summer! How many moose do you see?

Way back, like eons ago, we canoe tripped on the Allagash River and I went on the Dead River. Are you a paddler? canoe or kayak? Wow just how are the rivers? Still clean?

Thanks for the link on "fly rod"...just from the blurp they let you read from amazon=what a woman!

How heavy is your pole?

I learned to fish with my Daddy, then always had somebody, my brother or beau to beg help from. I never minded baiting even the minnows but the catches have always been about too much life. To feel the life source and let it free again is wonderful.

The first fish I had to take off the rod all by myself was when I took my boys fishing. We just went for something to do...and low and behold they hauled in this whale which I thought had to be a boot or tire and that turns into a huge bass!!! Trying to be the adult in this situation took me straight out of my elements! I ended up putting my foot on him in the shallow water and working the hook out of his mouth shrieking at every flop and flinch...the kids still talk about this.Their mom was such a girl LOL gives me the goose bumps just taking me back to thinking about the flops through my legs.
What kind of flies/line are you learning with? Do you talk to yourself when you're casting?

I'm learning to fly fish. I haven't caught anything yet. That's a good thing. I'm not up to the point of knowing what to do when I do catch one. I grew up in a boat with a rod and reel in my hand.

Are you familiar with Fly Rod Crosby?

Can you update, did you go on that trip? Anybody display old flies or lures?

How many have your own waders? Boat? What is your biggest catch? Favorite bait?

I couldn't sleep, got poison ivy all on the tops of my feet, so I got out early to cool the piggies in a mask of muck. Took my rod and hauled in a couple specckled trout, I plan on steaking up tonight.
Are you all fresh water women? I live on the Intracoastal.

jackson is just right over the pass from Victor..both are beautiful. I really love Idaho.
I love to fish too! I grew up fishing alot with my family..still do, but my husband isn't as hard core fish every day like my dad was. My two oldest sons never go a week without fishing if they can. Second son is quite the bass fisherman.
Victor only had 250 population when I lived there a hundred years ago...I bet it has grown alot!

oops, sorry about the 3 dots after .com... I didn't think about it messing things up...

I've never been fly fishing, although I've trout fished almost all my life... but always with casting or spinning rod & reel... I'm getting excited about learning... I've also never been to Idaho & would love to see it... I have a good friend who lived in Jackson, Wyoming, for a couple of years & just recently moved back to Texas... I'll have to ask her if they ever ventured across the state line to Victor... btw, all of my trout fishing has been in Colorado, mostly around Crested Butte, my favorite part of the world (so far)...

Ah, the joys of fishing...I married a non-fisherman and I really miss it. Just today I was cleaning out the basement and found a fly rod which had been my father's, and another which I bought just a couple of years ago, and never used. I was just thinking, next year I'm going fishing again, even if I have to go alone! There are a few good places to go, less than 1 hour from here, now I have something to look forward to next year!

Remove the dots at the end of "com", and then you should be able to access it. I've always been intrigued by fly fishing, Leslieanne... it's on my "one day" list of things to try. <sigh>

I lived in Victor Idaho as a child for about a year and a half. Nothing to do with your subject, but I have such good memories of my time there.
I wasn't able to open the link for some reason..will try again tomorrow. sounds like great fun...the fly fishing..my dad used to do it, and my oldest son ties flies and loves it too. I think I am only about 6 hours (guesstimating) from Victor. I really need to get up there and see how its changed in 35 years!!
