Posted - Aug 09 2004 : 11:13:29 PM I am not a "reality" show person...except for the PBS shows, Pioneer House, Colonial House, 1900's House, you get the picture.
So...PBS is my very favorite t.v. station and a week or so ago I saw a quick commercial for Quest for the Sea. Did anyone else catch it? Tonight it was on for 1 1/2 hours...I taped it for the kids to watch later. Very interesting. Not just about reinacting the time of the 1930's but they also talked to folks from the area (fishing bay village).
I think the final two episodes (another 1 1/2 hours) is on tomorrow night. I enjoyed it and was able to get a scarf knit during that time. :)

Posted - Aug 13 2004 : 08:09:45 AM Cecelia...I had seen a clip of something regarding the voyagers last year...just about the time Pioneer Quest was ending...but never actually saw the program.
I'll keep my ears open for any new "hands on history" programs.

Posted - Aug 12 2004 : 5:38:21 PM I'm not much of a TV fan, but we do watch the PBS a lot. I did see the Pioneer Quest program, and there was also a program about voyagers last year also - did anyone see that? I like to watch anything about the outdoors, or history. So if anyone sees anything coming up, let me know.

Posted - Aug 11 2004 : 08:18:14 AM Clare...thank you for figuring the Pioneer Quest thing out. I looked up all types of key words...to no avail. I taped last nights episode due to being invited over to the neighbors...so I watched the first part...will complete the second part later (too many chore to do). No wonder I enjoyed it so much...same producer. I will keep my eyes posted for anything "Quest" on PBS in the next few years.
Have a wonderful day!!!

Posted - Aug 10 2004 : 10:00:52 PM Just finished this evening's edition of Quest for the Sea. Terrific show!!! It had a familiar feel... then I read the credits. It is produced by Jamie Brown for the Canadian History Channel and distributed by American Public Broadcasting... Same as --guess what--Pioneer Quest. Key word being "Quest"... So we'll know to watch for that name for future shows he may do. Very good work. Excellent. Thanks for the heads up, Sherrie! Hope others of you find it when it comes to your local PBS station.

Posted - Aug 10 2004 : 3:44:40 PM I just found it!!! I had to really search too... : "PIONEER QUEST"... and it was in Manitoba.. got the province wrong the first time. http://www.pioneerquest.ca is the older couples website.. this one: http://www.umanitoba.ca/outreach/cm/vol8/no20/pioneer.html is a listing for schools about the whole series... and this was an intial ad that came out in the beginning: http://www.kvie.org/programs/bytitle/pioneerquest.htm
Here's the link to purchase the actually episode videos (it's not cheap): http://www.viewerplus.com/product.asp?Stat=History&ID=11949 I might be interested in a similar type show... although these reality shows make me really realize that I do appreciate things like hot running water, showers and refrigerators!!
I vaguely remember the Farmers Wife.... it was modern times, right?

Posted - Aug 10 2004 : 3:26:23 PM I so agree with you Sleepless...should it be called "Farmhouse Life"?
I have been searching for the past 15 minutes trying to find the name of the Canadian Pioneering show that was on last year. That one I truly enjoyed, even when they had to bring in the new couple. It's driving me nuts. PBS.org only has all the others we have mentioned for sale on DVD...I just can't find hide nor hair of it. If you think of it...shout out. I have to go stain more of the deck...I'm sure it'll pop in my head eventually.
Did you all see The Farmers Wife. That was many years ago and since it was a Nebraska thing dh enjoyed watching it.
Ok...off to work on the deck.

Posted - Aug 10 2004 : 3:01:19 PM I saw the end of the Canadian homsteading one on my local PBS (KPBS, San Diego) and I agree, it was really good. I also agree with Sherrie, Colonial House was not among my favorites. Too much whining and forcing the 21st century into the 17th century. Maybe we all should convince PBS to do a "Farmgirl" life and have us all living on a 1930's farm? Any takers? |

Posted - Aug 10 2004 : 08:13:23 AM Sherrie, I'm trying to remember the name of the program that KCTS showed last year, and then repeated it once.... it was based in Canada, a 50-ish couple and a 20-something couple were sent to Saskatchewan to homestead for 6 months. I was fascinated by that program, but I'm not sure that it was widely distributed. Did you see that one? I'll watch tonight and see the Quest for the Sea part two at least. They usually show highlights of the previous show, so I should be able to catch up.

Posted - Aug 10 2004 : 07:27:17 AM Clare...yes, it was KCTS Seattle. A bit more about it...The two families, plus a 75 yo woman and a 40ish single man were also part of the crew. They were all connected to Newfoundland and fishing in one capacity or another. There's a narrartor and interview with folks from the area...ranging in ages of 65 to 97 (they closed-captioned what the 97 yo man was saying, not because he couldn't speak...but because he had such an accent...very cute).
I hope you will be able to catch it. It's alot lighter in content that Colonial House...which was not one of my favorites.
Happy viewing...
