We are going in June (i think) to Mt. Rushmore. We have 4 kids---almost 11, 7,6,and 4. Wondering if anyone has been there and would have some things that we definitly shouldn't miss. we have researched a little bit already, but nothing is better than word of mouth!! thanks! becky

Ahh, my son wore his rushmore t-shirt today. We took a trip to Rushmore this past summer and LOVED IT! We had just as much fun at the KOA as we did at the sights! There was a funny man there who could make pancakes like cartoon characters,had a big handlebar moustache, it was uncanny!
Wind cave was a hit, Jewel cave too, we loved hiking in the black hills and had lots of fun in Deadwood City. You will have a smashing time!

We visited Mnt Rushmore and Crazy Horse last fall. Both were breath-taking! Be sure to have the kids do the Rushmore Junior Ranger notebooks. They have to do some research in the museum and answer questions. It's a wonderful program. They get a badge when they are done and you can also purchase a fabric patch for about $1.50/ea. Great, cheap souvineers that they actually earned/learned! Just a FYI for any other travlers, most national and many state parks have some type of junior ranger program...

My dear son and I went to Mt. Rushmore in 2005. I was so impressed by the "faces" as my relatives call them. They were smaller than I expected, but then one isn't right on top of them either. The museum and everything else is so clean. A must do is to listen to the guides as they explain the details. I was very impressed. I do hope you enjoy your visit. |

Kids seem to really love Mt. Rushmore. I know I did as a kid and two summers ago when my daugher and I were there, it was a highlight of the trip for her.
I lived in the southern Black Hills for a summer and worked for the Park Service at Wind Cave. I never did get to Jewel Cave but have always wanted to -- and Wind Cave is pretty neat, I might add.
There are SO MANY tourist attractions in the Black Hills. You could spend a small fortune there. We stuck to the national parks in the area; Wind Cave, Mt. Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Badlands... I love places like the Needles Highway and the scenery of the hills themselves (Ponderosa Pine trees, grasses, neat rock formations). Custer State Park is a great place, too.
I'm envious! Karin

Oh I love Mt. Rushmore! It is amazing! Don't forget to see Crazy Horse as well!
