Just so nobody worries...I will be home at night but more than likely will not have a chance (or enough energy) to sit in front of the computer when I get home. The hunt ends on the 9th. I'm hoping I get one early in the season. I'm hoping I get one, period! Wish me luck, we really need the meat this year.

Michelle, I've heard that WA and OR game populations are seriously low. Which is probably why your deer season is so short. That's also why many hunters from those two states come here to hunt. Some legally, some illegally. This year was the most crowded I have ever seen here. Two neighboring counties were burned out this summer and so all of those hunters came here, too. DH and I rarely EVER see anybody hunting on foot. We thought we were the only ones, anymore. But this year, we ran into six other hunters on opening day just in the morning! It made it much more difficult to even FIND an elk. It felt really wierd. We usually see lots of other animals that we can't shoot (deer, cow elk, etc), but this year, the forest seemed strangely empty.

Lisa, sorry you didn't get one. Hope you had a great time anyway. Interesting how seasons vary by location. Our deer season in this area was just 9 days long. We were very lucky this year to get one.

Wow, Jennifer! That's way cool. How lucky can you be to bag one so close to home? That is a dream come true. I'm still hoping for that one shot when the elk is UPHILL and after it's shot, it rolls downhill where I need it. It's usually the other way around when it has to be dragged up and over a mountain! Good for your hubby. Enjoy!

I hear you, Lisa, but a few seem to feel they have some sort of birthright - especially of they're landowners. They don't seem to have any regard for the concept of government wildlife management.
My hub shot a buck yesterday morning on our own 25 acres - a dream come true for him. Had the meat processed and in the freezer by noon, left the carcass for the coyotes & crows.
What a blessing.

Elk season is too short. The deer hunters get nearly a month. Cow elk season is also a month. Both through October. Bull season is only 9 days. How can a poacher be self-righteous? They're breaking the law! Unless you and your family are starving and dirt poor, I see no other excuse for poaching. Good luck to your hubby!

That is a bummer, Lisa, though it sounds like an exciting time. Elk season is too short, or at least it feels that way. Rifle season for deer just opened here in AR, and since my hub hasn't gotten one with his bow yet, he's out trying with his gun tonight. Buck only, per the regs. There are so many self-righteous poachers around here, it makes it tough for the legal hunters. Fingers are crossed... |

Well, the hunt is over and I was unsuccessful. Oh, Michele, I was hunting elk. I don't know why, I just assumed everybody knew what season it was here. My bad.
I took a shot at one the 2nd day and apparently nicked a branch and missed him. I went to take a second shot when he started running but he ran right between me and my husband who was farther down the trail. I'm not good enough to shoot at a moving target when my husband (or anybody) is somewhere on the other side of my target. So I couldn't shoot the second time. Then he was gone. I never saw another bull for the rest of the hunt. Bummer.
Annika, I'm not much of a bird eater. I don't care for chicken, unless it's smothered in something that covers the taste. I only eat one small slice of turkey on Thanksgiving just because it's tradition. Otherwise, I'd eat none at all. So, I probably wouldn't care for pheasant either. I'll bet you get a lot of bird hunters there, huh?

Good Hunting Lisa, our hunting season runs over the week of Thanksgiving. Our old minster always called the first day of hunting season, a holy day. My guys all go. Hope you get your humm, whatcha hunting? They hunt whitetail deer here. Good luck
