Hi Ladies,

Sara was so kind to post the following thread under last years Herb of the year for 2022, so I thought I would just copy and paste her posting here under a new thread for 2023.

Sara, thank you for keeping this thread going each new year! xo

In the past I have announced the International Herb Society Herb of the Year. This year it is ginger.

Last year there was a discussion on having different Farmgirls pick the herb of the year each year. I think that is a great idea so if you want to choose the herb this year and keep up with the thread please do so. I will no longer be hosting the Herb of the Year thread.

I think powdered ginger would go perfectly in your GF Cinnamon Coffee Cake. Maybe just a teaspoon would be enough to add a nice hint of ginger. Great idea!

I bought a box mix of Gluten free cinnamon coffee cake, can I add powder ginger to it or would it taste strange?

Karen, I too find that ginger can be hot/over powering. I do like small bits of crystalize ginger in cookies I may try it in some cake. I do like the spice in baked goods.

Cindy, I will have to make those Turmeric Ginger Energy Balls. This will be fun.

Here's another Ginger Recipe that I like to make:-

Turmeric Ginger Energy Balls

2/3 cup almonds
2/3 cup cashews
2/3 cup dried apricots
2/3 cup raisins
3 tablespoons flax
1 1/2 teaspoons ginger
1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric
pinch of salt

Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend until mixture comes together. Roll into balls. I store mine in the freezer.

I love Ginger but have never tried to grow any. I don't even know if it would grow here in Florida where the summers are very hot and humid. Sometimes, I get some crystallized ginger just to enjoy a piece or put it in a cup of hot mint tea.

I used to keep a box of ginger candy in my purse for car rides that didn't agree with me. Then the store quit selling it :( Where could I find some of that chocolate covered ginger, Grace? Sounds like a great thing to have!

Cindy from Bend Oregon, thank you so much for that recipe! I am a gluten free gal and I love ginger in stuff. I happen to have some crystallized ginger that I bought too much of and have been looking for ways to use it up! This one is right up my alley! Again thank you Cindy From Bend Oregon, Farmgirl #6058, Farmgirl Sister of the Year 2021

Oh, delightful! My two faves for using ginger are:
1. Just a tad in Lima Bean and ham soup gives an amazing lift to this hearty soup.
2. Lemon Ginger scones, yum . . .

The easiest way to peel fresh ginger is with a spoon. I have used this method many times and it really works.

For sore throats slice fresh ginger thin and cover with sugar of choice. Put sliced ginger in airtight jar and nibble on it during the day. It's not a true candied ginger but it's easy and feels good on a sore throat.

I have never done much with ginger. I have a little container of ground ginger, and an old piece in the freezer. Hopefully I try to use it a little more.

Oh ginger! Ginger makes gingerbread and that makes it wonderful. Hehe! It is nearly as wonderful as nutmeg, my most favorite of all. Celebrating ginger won't be a struggle in the least. :)

I LOVE GINGER! It's such a versatile ingredients in sweet and savoury dishes. Not to mention all of it's medicinal benefits (it can be used to treat nausea and motion sickness; it has great anti-inflammatory properties; and it is supportive for digestive and immune health).
I am now inspired to dig out more of my recipes with ginger in them. Here's one that I love, but haven't made for a while. It's a recipe created by "The Gluten-Free Girl".

Gluten-Free Banana Bread with Chocolate and Crystallized Ginger

6 tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 cup sorghum flour
1/2 cup tapioca flour
1/2 cup potato starch
1/2 cup teff flour
1 tsp xantham gum
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups mashed banana
1/4 cup full-fat yoghurt (or sour cream)
1 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup crystallized ginger

Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease a loaf pan. Melt the butter on low heat. Set it aside to cool.
Sift the four gluten-free flours into a large bowl. Stir in the xantham gum, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Stir them all up together.
In a large bowl, combine the mashed banana, eggs, yoghurt, melted butter, and vanilla. Stir until they are just combined. You don't want to over-cream the liquids.
Slowly, sift the dry ingredients into the wet batter, until everything is just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips and the crystallized ginger. Pour the batter into the greased loaf pan. Smooth the top.
Slide the loaf pan onto the middle rack in the oven. Bake about 45 to 50 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and a knife slides out of the bread clean.
Cool the bread for 10 minutes in the loaf pan, and then tip it out, slowly. Allow it to cool before you slice your first piece.

Thanks, April, for keeping the Herb of the Year going.

In MJ's Idea Book starting on page 129 are recipes for spice/herb blends. Several of the recipes call for ground ginger. I have made them, and they are very good. That's reminds me I should check to see which ones I need to makeup.
