Posted - Dec 27 2020 : 10:03:15 AM Seed catalogs are showing up in our mailboxes; plans for our gardens are jotted down in garden journals; so it's time to think about what to plant for our 2021 Farmgirl Jubilee. This year's International Herb Society Herb of the Year is parsley. I have one flat leaf parsley plant so I would like to add another one.
As in passed years Farmgirls may choose to plant roses to celebrate the Jubilee. So many choices and so few pots to put them in.
New Farmgirls can read all about the Jubilee under the title Farmgirl Jubilee Annual Celebration.
Edited to say: the Herb of the Year is just an idea. If you do choose to plant an herb in celebration of our Farmgirl Jubilee any herb you want to plant is okay.

Posted - May 29 2021 : 8:19:20 PM Hay there. Weeeellll......my first batch of parsley died. Lack of love...lack of water. I now have a few new plants so lets keep those fingers crossed. Its really bad when you manage 18 greenhouses and all the plants thrive but can't keep your own stuff alive. I also had to repurchase my rosemary!! {gosh darn it}. Hugs.

Posted - May 23 2021 : 05:31:19 AM Grace, Mitsuba or Japanese parsley is not a true parsley, but is supposed to taste like parsley. It grows in partial shade so that's why I wanted to try it. My back deck is over half in shade now thanks to neighbor's trees.
BTW Grace, I may be maturing, being a woman in her glory years, but matronly I refuse to be.

Posted - May 22 2021 : 12:06:24 PM My parsley starts didn't make it, I had started my seeds back in march, have babied them for months - our high desert spring weather is so inconsistent this time of year, gosh, just yesterday, we had rain, sunshine, hail, snow, more sunshine and more rain again, its been a continuous rollar coaster of weather... so, I had to run to the nursery to purchase some more herb starts! I did invest in a little green house this year and plan to start some more maybe next week and keep them in the green house for a while!

Posted - May 20 2021 : 06:28:52 AM Happy to hear y'all are parsley farmers now.
My three parsley plants are doing well but a little stunted because of all our dark cloudy days and a lot of rain. Not going to complain about the rain because come summer we may be in drought conditions again.
The only parsley I started from seed is the Japanese one from Baker Heirloom Seeds. It is doing good in the shade on back deck. It will have to grow a little more before I can taste a leaf to see how it matches up with Italian parsley.

Posted - Feb 20 2021 : 10:18:52 AM Winnie, planting in a container is a good idea. Double sided tape; cooking oil, or hot pepper sauce are three ways to keep caterpillars off the container.

Posted - Feb 20 2021 : 10:13:46 AM Parsley is a great herb to celebrate for our Jubilee 2021! I am going to try and get mine in early and in a pot this year. When I plant it in the soil, caterpillars come in the night and take the entire thing down to stubs! It has happened to me twice now. This year, I will try a new way and see if I can keep it going. Nothing better that fresh chopped parsley on fresh boiled and chopped red potatoes along with some butter and salt. Yum!!

I had a little giggle at the term "feeling" herbs. I do that all the time with my lavender but never had a term for it. Thanks! Hugs.

Posted - Feb 16 2021 : 04:09:45 AM Grace, munching is always a good thing ,and so is "feeling" herbs, and smelling your fingers.
Judith I ordered Italian parsley seeds. I'll have to remember to see if they reseed.
Nichelle, I've read about the rooted parsley so let us know how yours turns out. I ordered the Japanese seeds. It can grow in partial shade and boy do I have partial shade for it.

Posted - Feb 15 2021 : 5:28:16 PM I like the parsley idea. Did you know there's a rooted variety? (Kind of like celery has a rooted variety and a stalk variety?) Maybe that's my new challenge: try to grow root and regular parsley. And there's a Japanese herb that's very similar in flavor and purpose that I think I'll grow too. Time to start my seeds and look for dishes for all of them.

Posted - Feb 15 2021 : 1:13:27 PM Parsley is one of my favorite herbs and the most used. I grow triple-curled parsley the most and dry it for use in cooking when I don't feel like going out and cutting it. I had some Italian parsley in my big tub of sage and it reseeded the next year. It's biennial and I think this is the year I have to plant more.

Posted - Feb 15 2021 : 10:55:05 AM I luv Parsley! it is such a universal Herb.. but more times then not, I just enjoy picking a sprig fresh from the garden and munching on it.. My mom uses to always have a small bunch of Parsley growing buy the back door, and when we lived in Apartments she, would have them on the window sill in a pot..
