This year the International Herb Society has chosen anise hyssop as their herb of the year. I will plant one if I can locate one. The apple mint I planted last year is spreading and surviving the winter so far.
The Herb of the Year is only a suggestion. If you are interested in planting a herb or rose to celebrate our Jubilee the plant you choose is up to you. Like everything else when it comes to celebrating our Jubilee we do it our own way.

I was lucky and found some chocolate mint.. I love tucking a leaf or two in my iced tea...
I would love to grow more this year but we have quit the hectic schedule this summer so I won't be having much garden time :>(

Lori, That's quite a mint collection you have. I've grown all those mints except the candy lime. Would like to find that one for next year. I have spearmint, pineapple mint, and applemint growing now.

I have planted a few mints this year as there was nothing here when we moved here. I have peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint, and candy lime mint. I am looking for other kinds of mint as I would like to dry them for tea making. I am a tea drinker and love making my own hot or cold tea.

Thanks for the info, Vickie. I have a new cooking with herbs cookbook and it has a recipe for anise hyssop tea. I may try it using my lavender hyssop.

Rebecca, Althea bushes are so pretty. My neighbor across the street has several in her backyard and I enjoy them when in bloom. You'll have to let us know how they do.
I was a young woman before I ever heard it called an Althea bush. Before then I knew it as the Rose of Sharon - such a beautiful name.

For Jubilee I've planted two Althea bushes. The flowers are lavender colorered and they will grow to become small trees about 10 to 12 feet high. The deer love the flowers so I bought deer repellent. Sure hope it works. |

Thanks for asking about hyssop, Grace. My lavender hyssop overwintered in raised bed and is coming back better than ever. Never did order the anise hyssop.

I have seeds,,, and I am not afraid to sow them... lol!
Now to just have a nice sunny day to get outside and plant them...
I am going to have to buy a new chocolate mint plant, mine didn't make it, neither did my Sage.. all ok, I don't mind having an excuse to go plant shopping! heeheehe!

Well I planted a bunch of seeds in containers on my kitchen table under the window! If I wait on the weather I will miss the season! So I started some flowers and tomatoes and okra. Hopefully it will transplant nicely in a couple of weeks!lol! Yay!

Oh yum! I'm excited to see what everyone is planting and drinking! I am happy to say that I am also planting a herb garden and flowers in my side yard as soon as the swamp drains! In Massatuchett it is raining and cool! I did plant my cherry tomatoes in the house to get the starting of productive things! I also dug a drain ditch about 10 foot long to send water into the road from my side yard! I love flowers in salads and deserts! Teas of all kinds and snacking on fresh sprouts too!

Happy jubilee to all! We've had frost every morning but today it is 73! Can't plant till frost goes away! I have had anise hyssop in my garden before. It smells wonderful!

Today we are planting a herb garden outside the front door. We being my daughter and I will plant a herb garden for kitchen tea and medical. We will also be planting my mini pink rose bush .

well rats!!!, still up to our eyeballs in snow, with 2-4" of snow due in tonight!
I did buy some non-GMO seeds.... by the 'Page's Seeds" company.. but most likely have to wait till late May to plant them..

Ruthie Ann what kind of rose did you receive for your birthday?
Last year I planted a lavender hyssop and it survived the winter and is putting out new growth. I have limited sunny spaces for herbs so I won't be getting an anise hyssop. I did order a yellow rose "Mrs Oakley Fisher" for a large container. It will be my Jubilee plant for this year and to commentate being chosen Feb FGOTM. Will have to make a special label for it. I like making plant labels.
For new plants I make labels with how much water they need. M - moist; D - dry; D+ needs a little more water. The letters are big enough so I don't need my glasses - makes watering a lot easier.

I have a new old cookbook from a shop for $1. Sage Cottage Herb Garden Cookbook by Dorry Baird Morris 1991.
There's a recipe for herb iced tea with anise hyssop.
Eight 12" pieces of lemon balm
Four 4" pieces of pineapple sage
One 8" sprig anise hyssop
Rinse
Bend stems in half, then half again, crushing lightly.
Add 5 cups boiling water; steep. It doesn't say how long to steep but most recipes call for 5 min for hot tea. It may take longer for this recipe because it is for iced tea and more water will be added so you want a extra strong tea.
Strain. Add 5 cups cold water; chill; serve over ice.
Sweeten with honey or sugar if desired.
Note: Anise flowers may be used to garnish teas.

I would love to have organic herbs in my gazebo garden or front porch area. I'l have to look these up. The fragrance would be a welcome change from the cat spray we get from the Ferrel cats.

I love anise hyssop too. Have had lots of it in the garden. Adds a unique flavor to the room.

Marie that's interesting about using hyssop leaves for toothache. Thanks for letting us know. I like growing herbs that are medicinal.

I have planted hyssop before. It has a slightly licorice flavor. It also deadens pain. I would pack fresh leaves into an aching tooth.
