I'm starting this post early for all of you who plan your gardens during the winter and order seeds early.
2017 HOTY is cilantro "coriander". Leaves of the herb is cilantro and the seeds are coriander. Here in Texas we grow it for cilantro and don't save the seeds. This year I plan to let it go to seed for coriander. I think it would be neat to have home grown coriander seeds.
For new FarmGirls: Some of us plant the HOTY to celebrate our Jubilee and some plant roses. Like everything else connected with our Jubilee we choose our own path of celebrating. I choose to plant HOTY and in the past two years I planted 2015 winter & summer savory and 2016 chili peppers. This year I plan to plant all three years of HOTY.

Dianna I hadn't heard about the slow bolt kind. For FarmGirls who start from seed that's good to know. Since I moved I have no place to grow from seed and since I grow in containers buy the plants.

I've planted a 'slow blog's cilantro and the regular one. The regular one bolts so quickly but I will use that one for seed...love coriander. Hopefully the slow bolt will give me the fresh cilantro for my salads and chicken dish!
Sara cilantro here is 99cents! Still not too costly for such a big bunch! I never had success freezing it tho. :D

Nora that dressing sounds yummy. Never thought about cilantro with Ranch Dressing.

Linda, it's worth a try and it won't hurt you. So sorry you have to deal with vertigo. From time to time I have MS related vertigo so I know how you feel.

My cilantro plants are growing and I can harvest a little here and there.
Herb Quarterly came today with a nice article on the medicinal uses of cilantro and coriander seeds. I haven't read up on them so I didn't know they had other uses than seasoning. Several recipes for teas and pastes.
Cilantro Tea
A strong cilantro tea helps alleviate nausea and accompanying symptoms. Add cumin for warmth and extra digestive support.
1 Tbsp of chopped fresh cilantro leaves
1 pinch cumin (optional)
8 oz boiling water
Pour boiling water over cilantro leaves; steep 10-15 min or to desired strength.
Drink up to three cups a day.

On Moveable Feast on PBS this morning they used coriander flowers as edible garnish. Another reason to grow it this year - the flowers.

Love both cilantro and coriander, but don't have it in my herb garden. Might have to get some and plant it this year!
We use mostly cilantro in our Mexican dishes!

Same here Debbie! I have not been able to not have cilantro go to seed. I look at it in the morning and say "great I can cultivate it" and by the time I get to it, it has turned to seed! lol I use coriander in my Shepard's pie. I love coriander!

Hmmm, love cilantro. Haven't had good luck with it growing here,but alas I try. Jealous of Ninibini that her cilantro comes back each year. But again I will try. |

MaryJane, since cilantro bolts in Idaho where you live and here in Texas my guess is it just wants to go to seed. It's the cheapest herb in the grocery store here, 50 cents a bunch, so I may just grow it for seed this time around.
Have you tried freezing it in ice trays covered with water? I freeze basil that way and then put in zip lock freezer bags. Frozen cilantro wouldn't be good for fresh salsa but could be used in cooked dishes. I use it in dried beans, chili, and Tex-Mex sauces.

I think I'm going for the seed this year also, since we use coriander occasionally in some of our recipes. Good challenge! Love growing and eating cilantro. However, it does seem to bolt quickly here. I've tried drying it but the flavor never compares to the fresh version.

I let them dry on the vine, Sara. I don't know if that's the right way to do it, but it works for me! :) Our sage also came back on its own. I didn't even cover it last year, we just left it in ground to see what happened, and this past spring it flourished. So awesome. So I definitely recommend giving it a try. We did this with potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, lettuce, onions... I can't remember what else. But everything came back on its own. It was amazing. (We did plant new plants, too, though - our garden was not completely self-re-seeded.) I say, if you can find a spot, go for it - give it a whirl and see what happens! :) I'll be excited to hear how it goes! Hugs - Nini

Nina, do you let the seeds dry completely on the vine or harvest green/partial green and dry another way? Since I grow cilantro in pots and keep it from going to flower so I have never had it to re-seed. Next spring I may look for a out of the way spot where I can experiment with growing one plant in the ground and let it go to seed.
Gardens and gardening keeps us young because we are always learning; trying new plants; and new ways of doing things.

Awesome, Sara - Thank you! I have cilantro that comes back every year in my garden! We get plenty of green, then I allow it to go to seed. I collect most of the seed and use it both whole and ground in different recipes. The rest of the seed somehow manages to survive winter and is one of the first plants to pop up in the spring! Nora, for me cilantro is one of those herbs that I like a little of but don't won't too much of it in my food.

Dawn, well said. Dill is a favorite of mine too. I grow herbs in pots and will have to plant several pots of cilantro to have enough seeds to harvest. Cilantro tends to bolt in the Texas heat so to have a continuous supple of fresh cilantro I will have to keep one plant from flowering. Or, plant in succession.

Coriander, cilantro, is used a lot in middle eastern cooking. Unfortunately IL soil and summers are not the best place to grow it. Even though cilantro is 2017's darling, dill will always have my heart!
