For us who will plant the Herb of the Year for Jubilee 2016 we are in for a treat this year - it's - Peppers (Capsicum). So many choices and degrees of heat to choose.
The International Herb Society selects the herb of the year. I went to their web site and copied what's coming through 2020.
2017 Coriander/Cilantro
2018 Anise Hyssop
2019 Hops
2020 Rubus which includes Blackberries, Raspberries, etc.

Nina, so happy your peppers did so well. I had two Tabasco pepper plants and made pepper sauce.

Sara, I have to tell you: For us, this definitely WAS the year of the peppers! We still have some growing out in the garden, even though we had uprooted the plants to allow them to compost in place! We grew all sorts of different kinds of peppers, and every single one BURGEONED! I canned them, I made hot pepper spread, I froze them, I dehydrated them, I stuffed them... I did almost everything pepper I could think of shy of fermented hot pepper sauce (next year, I hope!). Our neighbors all got some, and our next door neighbor even took them over to his elderly sister - even the uber hot ones! So, I don't know why peppers were elected Herb of the Year for 2016, exactly, but I have to say, it definitely was it's finest year in our garden! I just finished harvesting my peppers. I froze some, dried some and made jelly from some, as well as saving some to eat fresh. It felt good to get the greenhouse all cleaned out. Marsha, I'm late answering your post. I have used chopped up hot peppers or red pepper flakes on the places where stray cats were doing their business. They would go to another place in my yard and I would 'doctor' it and after a couple of times they moved on and out of my yard.
Checked my peppers today and one plant is covered with teeny peppers. The other plant has one. My hope is to have enough peppers to make several bottles of hot pepper vinegar with fresh herbs.

So many great tips about peppers and handling them.
I will have to check out our tractor supply store to see if they have organic seeds.
I wonder if the pepper plants themselves will deter the Ferrell cats from coming in our yard? That would be wonderful.

Too bad we can't share some of our sunshine with all of you! We are getting lots of sunny but dry days here and it getting hot. Thankfully, the mornings have still been in the 60s with low humidity but that will not be lasting too much longer.

I plan to plant mine in the garden but not until after June 9th. We had frost yesterday morning! Same for my tomatoes!

Our weather has not been good for growing peppers - not enough sunny warm/hot days. One plant is a little over a foot tall and just now setting blooms. The other is only 4"X4", no blooms, but heathy. I'm in hopes that as our Texas heat sets in both will grow and produce peppers.

I look forward to doing a garden this year. I never got around to it last year. I have seen the Chocolate Bell pepper plants at the local hardware store. I will pick some up this year and give them a try. Thanks for the idea Sydney and sonshine!

My family has a greenhouse business and plants just about everything possible(even watermelon, in Minnesota). We plant a lot of peppers every year, my favorite kind is Chocolate Bell. It is so sweet. |

I have never planted peppers before will give them a try.
hope to have a garden this year. been long time since had one.
are red peppers good as pest deterants does anyone know
we have fire ants here pretty bad.
wondered if hot peppers planted around the garden if might help keep
fire ants out

I know what you mean. We use our frozen peppers for cooking and, for the most part, it didn't really matter if they were mushy. But I do like the idea of drying, so we'll see what kind of pepper crop(s) we get this year!

I used to freeze our peppers Ceejay but they always got mushy so I am going to start drying to use.

We freeze our extra peppers, but I've thought about drying for flakes as Sara does. We'll see what happens this year!

Judith, I think there is no official plant - we are free to plant what works best for us and our locations. Two of the popular choices are roses and peppers.
I will make a marker for my 1 pepper plant in a pot and work on a Merit Badge too. As we work on Jubilee projects we can keep Merit Badges in mind.

Beginner Level - Make markers out of tin can lids. Start saving those lids.

Sara, you really perked me up this morning as I read this thread! I haven't planted the hot peppers for a couple of years because my SIL has started planted them. I pickle them for him. Over the years I have had much enjoyment planting, preserving, drying, stringing, and cooking with all kinds. Now, I'm getting Spring Fever!
I love the idea of planting peppers for jubilee this year! Does anyone know if it is a "Go"!?

My husband is from Texas, so he quite ready with suggestions when I cook or garden :) This year we are planting "Hatch" peppers. He ordered the seeds from Hatch,NM. I hope they survive. It's been 25 years since I started anything from seed. Out of practice in Michigan.
I used to collect human hair from a Salon , put it knee nylons and hang it in my garden to keep rabbits and deer away. Worked great.
