Gosh, I realize it's not football, um, I mean feetball season, but there are still other sports going on like basketball and pre-season baseball.

Are y'all keeping up with any particular team?

MaryJane, we were also sad that Gonzaga lost. My hubby cheers for them every year. I usually tag along with whoever he's cheering for. But I like saying the name Gonzaga. There's something cool and exotic sounding to the name. I know, I'm a weirdo.

Nini, omg, I laughed so hard. You used words and painting a wonderful picture in my mind of your trip. You're a great wife. Our hubbies would get along great because mine also watches old baseball games and screams at the tv like it's live. He lives and breathes stats. We live near Houston and every year he talks about wanting to go to open tryouts. I used to think he might have a chance but now at almost 50, I'm not so sure.

Right now there's a crossover of baseball and basketball happening at the same time. Hubby flips between channels and keeps up with multiple games. I just sit and sip my tea and enjoy sitting next to him.

Oh, Catherine... Baseball season... My husband is SUCH a baseball fanatic that we practically LIVE baseball all year long! I used to be an avid fan, but he has almost completely sucked the life out of it for me! LOL! He watches old games, he watches new games, he watches documentaries, he watches interviews, he reads all the books, all the stats.. You get the idea. He even took me to the ballpark several years in a row to celebrate our anniversary! UGH! It's not very romantic having to listen to your husband heckling the opposing team for three hours or so, believe me; but I just told myself it was a small sacrificial gift in the name of love. Hmph. THEN last fall we took a family vacation - the first in many, many, MANY years. I had everything planned out - I knew where we were going, the sights we wanted to see, the people we wanted to visit... I promised to remain flexible, of course, but, baby, I had PLANS! WELL, our first stop was to Cooperstown, NY... Yeah, I guess I can be a bit of a masochist when it comes to baseball, but I love the big lug. When people say what a lucky guy he is to have me, though, trust me: they have noooooo idea.

I knew how much he'd love the Baseball Hall of Fame - for Pete's sake, he could be the head curator! - so I set aside half a day for the museum, and planned on seeing one or two other sites in the area for the rest of the day. Fair enough, right? Well... We were there when it opened. First thing I did was surprise him with his own membership as an anniversary gift. He was on Cloud 9. Deep down, at that point I knew I had lost him, but I held out hope. We went and saw their introductory presentation, and his eyes lit up like a little kid watching fireworks on the Fourth of July. The crowd dispersed, we took a few pictures of him at a couple of exhibits, but then suddenly he disappeared. Our son and I knew better than to look for him - we knew it was over. We roamed the exhibits, marveling in the history, the sights, the sounds, the memorabilia... It was pretty cool, I have to admit. Three hours later, though, my doggies were barking, my back was aching, we were hungry, tired and plum baseballed out (and believe me, our son is a big fan himself!). An hour after that, we found Dad reading...and I mean READING. He was reading EVERY plaque on EVERY exhibit, just soaking it in. He hadn't even made it past the first floor! OMGOODNESS! We were in trouble. We managed to pry him away for a quick lunch, but as soon as he scoffed down his sandwich, he headed right back in. Our son and I spent a couple hours nosing around the shops, and went back to find him, but he still hadn't even made it half-way through. At that point, he told us we could just go do the other activities ourselves, if we wanted, but this was the trip of a lifetime for him, and he really, really, really didn't want to leave. Of course, we understood. We thought for sure he'd peter out after another hour or so, though; and to be honest, I was worried how HIS back would hold out, so we stayed. We should've taken his clue. Enough said. Let's just say darkness was falling when he finally emerged, and he didn't look like the same man with whom we arrived that morning. I swear, his eyes were glowing, his clothes were disheveled, he had a permanent smile on his face... and he was spewing facts and interesting quips like no one's business. A baseball transfiguration. It was... there are no words. And let me tell you, he wasn't the only one. There were TONS of these baseball zombies roaming the halls that day! Eeeeerrriiieeee... The rest of the vacation, that's all we heard about (two weeks' straight worth of baseball trivia, old and new - eghads!). I was so happy for him on the one hand, and vowed never to watch another baseball ANYTHING on the other! LOL! And then, just last week, he started talking about possibly getting his season tickets back again this summer (HA!), and heading back to Cooperstown for another vacation THIS fall (HA! HA!)! Soooo... To partly answer your question as to where the baseball sporties are? This one, at least, was killed by Cooperstown! LOL!

I'm sure I'll get a hankering for a ballpark hot dog eventually and head out to PNC Park to take in a Pirates game; but right now, I am thanking God above that we don't have cable and can't get ANY baseball on the Roku! LOL! (If he wants to watch the games, he can go next door and watch them with our neighbor. I'll gladly make platters of snacks and desserts to send over with him, thank you very much!) Well, actually, that's wrong... We COULD get an MLB subscription so he could watch games at home, but Mr. Purist doesn't like that idea. With the subscription, he wouldn't be able to see the game until just after it ends. HE says if you can't watch the game live as it's happening, there's no point watching it at all! Hmph... I sure wish he'd remember that when he watches the old games from the 60's over and over and over and over and over.

Yes, friends, I am a baseball widow in the most profound sense. It is the BANE of my existence. Therefore, Nini has left the ballpark...

Hugs -

Nini
