Posted - Jan 09 2023 : 2:59:00 PM New here, searched around a bit, hope this topic isn't redundant. Has anyone tried a coffee filter string quilt? Uses a coffee filter as the foundation. Resulting circle can be appliqued onto a square for a quilt block. Looks like fun, and, boy, do I have stringy bits aplenty. And coffee filters, as I now cold-brew the coffee. It seems you could use a second filter stitched 1/4" from the edge on top of the stringed foundation, clip through the second filter and turn the whole biz inside out, essentially turning the edge of your circle without having to needle-turn it. Hmmm. Thoughts? |

Posted - Jan 14 2023 : 8:41:34 PM OK, I think I've got proof of concept if I can upload the compressed image files. coffee filter 1 has strips sewn onto a filter coffee filter 2 has a second filter sewn on top and slit, ready to turn inside out coffee filter 3 is turned to make an edge for applique and both coffee filters (mostly) removed. Clear as mud? Whatcha think?
Gosh, I hope this works! |

Posted - Jan 11 2023 : 2:03:19 PM debbieklann, I love What Was I Thinking? for a column title!
quiltee, yeah, completed projects...ah, there's the rub! I've been kinda in a funk for a couple of years, only working on a snippet roll via Anne Brooke on facebook, unfinished, and 52tags, also via AB, and also unfinished, just small things that don't require a ton of brain power or time. Did finish 3 baby quilts for quilt club, very simple. And a knit cap for the little boy across the road. May get better now that I've had cataract surgery on both eyes and am about to get a new eye exam for glasses. Wheee! |

Posted - Jan 11 2023 : 1:53:17 PM windypines, I think you have something there! Maybe "not gonna do it/donated!" I'm thinking that's what's going to happen to some of these; just no interest in the time needed, regardless of how much has already been invested. I'll try to include a pattern or some clue so whoever picks it up at Goodwill or whatever will have an idea what had been intended. Have a shrug that only needs seaming, but I found (from another shrug) that they aren't for me, especially one this big and drapey. Too much hanging off the arms, getting in the way, caught on doorknobs, etc. Meant for a "lady of leisure" (NOT ME!). If I don't sew up the wrist bits, someone could unravel it for the boucle yarn. I'll put in the pattern, though, just in case. |

Posted - Jan 10 2023 : 2:23:30 PM Oh, boy! Pressure's on now to make a sample to post. I'm notorious for starting, but I do have, ahem, quite a few "proof of concept" blocks/projects here and there. This will be top of the list. I will NOT be posting my UFO/PhD list. A quilting buddy made an impressive table with columns like: Thought about it Found a pattern Bought the pattern Bought/gathered fabric(s) all the way to Bound/faced quilt and DONE! So much more heartening to check off one little column... My list might break the internet... |

Posted - Jan 10 2023 : 02:36:48 AM Neat idea!! We always need a way to use up scraps or strips. English paper piecing is what came to my mind when you were describing it. I have never done it, but my ma has. Have fun with it.

Posted - Jan 09 2023 : 8:33:32 PM I like the scappy and the strippy look - I just love scrappy quilts. LOL!
I know you can sew a piece of muslin on the back of circles and do what you were talking about with a second filter. Then you don't have to remove it.

Posted - Jan 09 2023 : 3:58:39 PM Yep, quiltee, that's a site I saw! I want to do strings side by side, although her crazy-quilty look uses up bigger pieces and is nifty. Forgot to mention taking the filter paper out, as usual for paper-piecing. I think I'd leave it on until I sewed the second filter so the circles would match up easier, then rip/soak both filters off. I've ironed a few filters and some scrappy strips... Oh, by the way, really like your signature line! |

Posted - Jan 09 2023 : 3:50:58 PM Your description of the block sounded like you are leaving the filter on the sewn pieces in the quilt. According to this I found on Pinnterest, you remove the filter after cutting the circle by soaking in water. Have fun making the quilt.
