I keep forgetting to show you this Amish Rug my girlfriend in Iowa sent me for my birthday. She lives close to an Amish and Mennonite Community in Kalona, Iowa. She knows how much I love anything made by the Amish as I have been to Kalona and I love the town and the folks. It was like Jeez maybe 2009 I was there and bought an old quilt made out of men’s dress jackets. It is just a wonderful little community. Anyway, the rug was made with double knit fabric, I use it in my side of the bed. I like it because it is so colorful. It looks easy to make for the Farmgirls that like to use their sewing machine.

Posted - Sep 04 2022 : 02:23:21 AM My mom and grandma used to make those rugs. They used polyester material. That was what the ladies pants used to be made out of.

Posted - Sep 03 2022 : 6:09:34 PM I agree; black on the back and I would probably use a variegated on the front. Not sure if I will make one or not; I'm still trying to get some UFOs out of the way. It sure is tempting, tho.

Posted - Sep 03 2022 : 6:04:10 PM Oh, well that is good to know that the fabric is still available. Judith are you thinking about making one? I think I would have used black thread on the back, as I think it would look better.

Posted - Sep 03 2022 : 5:49:15 PM I had the same thought about finding double-knit fabric. Thrift shops might be the best idea, cheaper and keeping microfibers out of the environment for a while longer, but I googled "polyester double-knit fabric" and lo and behold it is still available.

Posted - Sep 03 2022 : 1:08:13 PM You are welcome Judith. My friend thought about making one for herself and wondered if she would have any trouble getting polyester knit fabric. We thought perhaps goodwill or thrift stores. I am guessing they chose the polyester as it stands up and holds well. If my friend does make herself one I will send pictures.

Posted - Sep 03 2022 : 1:01:34 PM It looks like it is squares of fabric folded diagonally into triangles then stitched down into rows on a backing. Being double-knit it isn't likely to unravel and will wear well, not to mention being washable and soft on bare tootsies. Ingenious! Great Pictures; thank you bunches Debbie.

Judith here are a couple of pictures close up. They did see it with a treadle machine as they invited my friend to got to their home to pick out a rug as they were all at her house. This was very unusual to be invited to their home but they know my friend well as she buys from them a lot. Hope this helps Judith.
