I have had a sewing machine cabinet sitting in my hallway for about 2 years. It was given to me by a friend of mine. She got it at a yard sale for I think she said $5. I offered to pay her for it, but she refused. Anyway...she said that there was an old machine inside, but that she didn't think that it worked anymore. Well, I used it for a lamp table in mom's room and when I was cleaning up today, I decided for grins and giggles to get it out and see what it was. Well, it is a White Rotary model 41 from about 1936. It is complete with an instruction booklet and multiple feet...ruffler, bias tape maker/applicator, cording foot, hemmer feet (four different hemmer width feet), zipper foot, pin tuck foot, narrow hemmer, furrower foot and a lace applicator foot. Oh, my gosh in my wildest dreams I never thought it would work. Well.....It works perfectly. I oiled it and cleaned it and filled the vaseline pots on the motor and it makes the most beautiful seams one can only dream of with a modern machine. It is truly a vintage piece that I shall cherish and use and do vintage sewing on!! Do I hear APRONS?????!!!!!. Kim....I am going to use it on some of your things!!!! Oh, I can hardly wait to do a whole project on it!!! Gotta learn how to use all of these "new"fangled feet!!!

I try to take and post a photo of it on my blog later today or this evening!!

Happy sewing all!

Georgann-

What a wonderful find! And for only $5! Someone did not know what they had! It is amazing that so many people are getting rid of these wonderful treasures that we would _love_ to have!

Mima-
That is so sad! Your poor car! And your poor sewing machine money! *hugs*

Georgann,
I love your machine story. I too have an old found machine. When I got married 3 yrs ago there were many surprises in the basement of DH house. One was an old machine cabinet. I decieded to clean it and use it to sit the TV on in my sewing room. DH said his Mom's old machine was in there. When I went to clean I found a 1919 Singer electric. Black with beautiful red and yellow flowers painted on it. The foot pedal is "new" (probably 60's) We dated it on line using the serial number. Since DH Mom was born in 1918 this machine had to be his Grandmothers. Hubby is going to update the pedal and I have already gotten a new belt. I plan to sew on it. Right now it is sitting out on display in the sewing room. Like yours I have all attachments and the book. What fun!

Too blessed to be stressed!

I just spent the most lovely time reading your fascinating blog!! I loved it!!! Just wanted to let you know that. Your horses are beautiful and your accounts of the chickens and how they ostracized the poor chicken who narrowly escaped being a hawk's attack was really something to think about!!

Get your grandmother's sewing machine out! Quick. You will be addicted in no time.

Thanks for having such a great blog....and good luck with your egg adventures!!! Oh, BTW, I too am a semi-retired RN!

I have had my Grandmothers treadle sewing machine..."New Home" brand from when she was newly married (she married in 1918)...it still has all the attachments and the original instructions, but I can find no date. She died 5 years ago at 102 and used it well into her nineties. I cannot believe that I have never tried to use it. You gals are giving me the idea that maybe I should oil it and give it a try. Don't you just love Grandmother's treasures????

Keep Smiling.....Bev

Aunt George,
A treasure right under your nose and you didn't know it, what a nice surprise. I know you will get the most out of it with your sewing skills. What are you making besides the wedding dress?

Georgann - mine has the foot treadle that operates it - I haven't used it in awhile, but after we move, I'm going to get it back in the sewing mode - my grandmother was so good at using the treadle, there's an art to it and I will have to practice again!

Have fun with all the attachments!

Oh my gosh! You lucky girl! Remember my quest to find a new sewing machine? Well! Idiot me! Last week I was backing out onto a very busy street in my cute little 2003 Jetta that I only have 3 more payments till its paid off! While I was so busy watching the oncoming traffic I didnt see the no parking pole, hit it, and clipped my front bumper half way off!!! Waaa!!Its gonna cost 3,000 bucks to get it fixed. Luckily, I have insurance so I have to pay the $500 deductable! Goodby sewing machine! I felt like that childrens book, Alexander Who Used To Be Rich Last Sunday!!!! LOL??

Linda, that is so great. What a wonderful machine to have!! Do you know how to use and do you use all of the specialty feet? I too am simply amazed at what this simple machine sill be able to do! Does yours have the knee pedal? I've never used the knee one before and I think I really like it. It is also in the original cabinet with the mini pin cushion on the door tray with two spool holders! Thanks so much for sharing your mother memory with me today!!

Georgann - I have the same machine!! I'm not sure what the model number is, but it is definitely a Rotary. It was my grandmother's and she bought it in the early 1920s or 30s when my mother was a little girl. She taught me how to sew on it and I have had it since before she died. I have all the attachments and special feet also - amazing what they made back then. It is in great condition and still in the cabinet which has all the little wooden drawers with all the special pin cushions and other sewing stuff that she had collected over the years. I have it in my living room because it is a beautiful piece of furniture. Everyone comments on it and I feel so lucky to have it, we were very close and I basically idolized her and all she could do with her hands. She made everything and lived such a simplified and basic life. Came here from Italy in her 20s. My husband and I look at the old sewing machines in antique stores all the time - there are many of them and they are usually between $50 and $75. But I think mine is special because it was my grandmother's. I'm happy that you have one also. Enjoy it!

Linda
