I accidentally left a ball-point pen in the pocket of my white oxford-cloth shirt (that's what I get for being a geek without a pocket protector) and now I have 5 white shirts with blue spots all over them.
Luckily I stocked up on some sale shirts ($4.95 each) a while back, so I do have something to wear to work tomorrow. But now I have these shirts and I hate to throw them away.
Any ideas of what to do with them? I have thought of cutting them into squares to make potholder filling...

Oh, thanks for the tips, girls, but it's all over the shirts, I don't think I'm going to be able to salvage them. If it was just a small spot I would try but it is majorly blue. I thought about dyeing but I'm afraid it would look like a tie-dye job!

Same here with the alcohol/hairspray, and I also use my handmade lye soap. It gets out lots of stains. Goodluck!

I second the alcohol and hairspray for getting out ink stains. I have used both of years with sucess.

Failing all of the above, what about dying the shirts a color that would cover up the stains, like dark blue, brown or black?

It's the alcohol in the hairspray that works. You didn't say if it went through the washer AND dryer before you realized, better if it's not set by the heat. Try putting a cloth underneath to soak up the blue, pour or spray alcohol directly on the spot and try to blot the color through. I doubt if there's anyone who hasn't done something similiar at one time or another. Be glad it wasn't an heirloom!

I read recently that rubbing alcohol removes ball point pen stains. I've just used it on a couple of small marker stains and it worked. I put a white towel under the stain and put the alcohol on the top with a Q -tip and then blotted and kept moving the towel and blotting. I washed the item and then treated again. It was almost gone the last time, so I rubbed some Fels-Naptha on the stain, let it sit for a minute or two, then washed again. It takes time and patience(I'm not good at either of those), but it did finally work for me. There's a lot of good info online, too.

Did you try getting the ink out? Hairspray or milk always worked for my mom. Or bleach them?
