Posted - Feb 05 2022 : 6:10:53 PM I recently discovered a box of goodies I put away. They all belonged to my grandma. Now that some time has gone by since her passing I'm ready to do something with them but I'm not sure what. In the box was a lot of doilies, dresser scarves, a couple pillow cases, some towels, and some things I'm not sure what you are supposed to do with LOL! But, they're almost all hand embroidered or some kind of stitching as in the case of the towels. I'll post some pictures but what kind of things have you done - or would like to do - with treasures such as these? Some are in fantastic shape and I'll probably find a way to use them as they are. Some have holes or stains or the stitches are coming out. Those are the one's I need ideas for.

Posted - Feb 12 2022 : 9:23:23 PM Carrie,, great idea to tea stain them.. I think you can use onions to get a golden brow stain, but I need to double check if that is correct.
Heather, I framed a couple of doillies and hankies in the past to display...

Posted - Feb 11 2022 : 5:39:46 PM That's a good idea Carrie! I've been thinking about trying some tea staining - this would be a good thing to start with. Thanks.

Posted - Feb 11 2022 : 05:20:12 AM Heather, for the stained one... maybe try staining the whole thing, by doing a tea stain. A friend inherited some of her gram's pieces like that. She didn't want to decorate with them, but she and her husband entertain a lot, so she made several serving trays with some of them...basically, she attached them to the floor of the tray and then poured epoxy on top. They are beautiful.
I am certainly very jealous. being one of 9 granddaughters, and the youngest when she passed, I didn't get any of her beautiful creative works. I do get to see them at my cousin's houses occasionally.

Posted - Feb 07 2022 : 10:43:37 AM Thanks ladies! I thought about the table runner idea, but in reality I don't need another tale runner. I love the few I have. And worry about staining them all the time. I have no idea how to darn things. I would love to learn! As for windows or a wall covering - we're hoping to relocate so maybe I'll save some for a new house. The jacket idea sounds cute! I'll have to keep my eye out for a denim jacket at the stores in town or a garage sale (they should be starting before long). I LOVE aprons so I might see what I can come up with for one. Maybe a little purse or somehow incorporated into a tote bag to carry while browsing garage sales LOL! If you have any other ideas let me know. I have a board started on pintrest. Just wondered what you have had success with.

Posted - Feb 06 2022 : 04:55:05 AM Heather, those are beautiful. Very similar in style to many I have from my grandmother. Lots of embroidery and the edges are either done in tatting or crochet. I use many of them on my dressers and night stands or side tables. They spent lots of time making pretties for their homes back then. I have restitched to fix the embroidery on mine. Haven't figured out how to fix the small holes.

Posted - Feb 05 2022 : 9:28:31 PM Sooo beautiful! Pinterest has many ideas for reusing doilies and embroidery pieces. Incorporate into aprons, quilts, sachets, sew together, create a curtain, ottoman covers, etc. Ive even see pieces framed into art or wall hangings.. Have fun! Post pictures, Heather, would love to see what you come up with!

Posted - Feb 05 2022 : 7:40:18 PM My advice:
1) Repair or replace the stitching. Finish the one that is unfinished. 2) Embroider a colorful design that would cover the stains. 4) Darn the holes and embroider around them. 5) Now the fun part. Hand sew them together in interesting configurations to cover a table, a window or a wall. For a wallcovering add light interfacing to the backs and put on a backing.
Whatever is decided, let me know if I can help in anyway. I have repaired embroidery before.

Posted - Feb 05 2022 : 6:34:57 PM Heather -- the three piece set is for a vanity table. My daughter has one of those tables in her guest room and I found and embroidered a couple sets for her. I used to love embroidering.

Posted - Feb 05 2022 : 6:27:07 PM Sadly no, all of my stuff is still packed. But it was a pre form pillow size that you would put on the couch. She just seed all the doilies she wanted together to the size she wanted. I will see though if I can find an example for you Heather.

Here's one that is stained and the stitches are coming out of the top. Not sure if I could cut it down and make a pocket for an apron or...I don't know - that's why I'm asking LOL!

I love the bright colors of this one! It's like a table runner - the other end looks the same.
This one is unfinished and stained, but it sure is neat!

I'm guessing maybe the 2 square ended ones are for the arms of a chair and the round one for the back. I'm not sure.
With the shape of this one and the amount of embroidery work I have no idea what it would be used for.
