Wanted to share a picture of a new little rug I just finished making. It was made from strips of bedsheets I accumulated from garage sales and thrift shops and just plain asking people for old sheets. I thought it turned out pretty well. I found the how to in a Mother Earth News magazine.

Very pretty Chris! Nice fresh clean colors! My Gram used to braid rugs out of old woolen clothing. She had one in her HUGE living room that covered the entire floor! I loved playing with her rolls of wool strips as a little girl- can't believe she let us! LOL It was always fun to hear her look over the rug and say "that was my Daddy's Sunday suit" or "that red there, was Aunt Ruby's winter skirt".  She taught me to braid a rug, but shame on me, I have never taken the time to do one of my own. I'm impresed that you just got down to it & taught yourself! Kudos Chris!

Patti,
I think the best time to add a new color is when you are beginning to round the corner,
or just before you get into the straight of the rug - just before the end of rounding the corner. Or perhaps stagger it throughout the rounded area, start with one strip by cutting and adding your new color, then go about a fourth of the round, do a second strip with a new color, go another fourth and do the third strip, then near the end of the rounded area, add the fourth strip. That would transition it, if you don't want a blunt start and end. I just use different color strips (like I started with three of one color, then added a different color 4th strip). Then I'll keep two strips of the original color and add a new color and go for a while(you can see the lighter color blue) then I went back to the original colors(and stuck a piece of yellow I had sitting around) Then I did a round of purple and dark green in with my two original colors - then I went back to the two original colors and did the light blue again a few times around.....then I ended with two of the original colors and some darker royal blue and tried to end it as i got into the rounded area - the upper right hand corner is where I ended - as you can see the dark blue area looks a little fatter. You can see where I started and ended with the colors but that doesn't bother me and I wasn't looking for perfect symetry, just pretty good is all.

I rip my bedsheets first (usually just hang the strips on hangers- but you can put them in plastic or paper bags too) then in the evening when I'm watching tv, I get my ironing board out and a little water spray bottle (use steam iron if you prefer) and iron my strips. Its better to have what you need ready before you start cuz its a pain to have to stop braiding/weaving and prepare supplies. I did do that near the end of the rug because I didn't want a bunch of left over strips. Not difficult, just time consuming - but I think the end product is worth it.

Very nice! I like the colors and the "pattern". I'm new to rug making (took a class a few weeks ago) and can't imagine how you figured out when to start the strips so it came out just right. I've been practicing with an old sheet, but I haven't added a different sheet yet. Anyway, great job!!
