Darlene (doctordor) had posted a knitting question in another thread and it made me think that perhaps we should have a knitting thread going to answer questions.

Darlene, if your stitches slip off, you might have too loose of a tension. I'm thinking that you are using double pointed needles. You can purchase stoppers for those ... or make one with thick foam.
Fix cables are great in that you will not be dealing with the unwinding of the cable. However, depending on the project you are working on, you will need the same size needles with different length cables. The only fixed cables I have are for 2.5mm as they do not make them interchangeable and I bought them with a 16" cable.

Debbie - it was pretty soft but I think the best part was how stretchy it was in all directions. That way if you're sitting and want it to cover more of your back it will or if you're standing and want to kind of pull it down your side you can do that too. I've never made anything with the big needles before. My husband got them for me for Christmas last year because they were purple (my favorite color) so I decided to give it a try. If I get some free time I'd like to see if I can find some patterns that use the big needles. I'd like to see what you're supposed use them for.

Both of your projects are incredible, Carole and Krista! I can not knit...I'm not sure if I want to learn or not...I enjoy crocheting but can only do the basic stitches and can't read a pattern to save my life...

How long have you been knitting, Carole? Your projects are just incredible! I was thinking of trying to find a mitten pattern but it will be just one simple color and if it turns into a frogging production it'll end up being a UFO LOL!
Here's the very simple pocket shawl I made for mom for Christmas:
apparently I didn't take a picture of it once I put the pockets on :(
It was made with really big needles (size 17), the "shawl in a ball" yarn, and a dishcloth pattern of knit 5 rows purl 1, repeat. I like the pattern with smaller needles but you really can't tell with the big ones.

Hello everyone,
Wow, a couple more days till Christmas. Well I think I cut it close. I had started a Felix Cardigan as a Xmas present for Pumpkin.
She loves green and I like this pattern (I have one on the needles for me that's been put on hold). Purchased the yarn in October and started knitting in between the chaos of life. Well, I finally finished it today. It has been blocked and button sewn on. I had to use the buttons from my cardigan, but that's ok.
Voila!
It's an easy pattern. Raglan construction knit in the round. I love the lace work on the shoulders. I hope she likes it. Now to wrap it!

Marie, I did copy and paste......hehehe. Linda, I did make mine wider then the pattern. I tried it one till it was a width I liked. So you can add as many rows as you like. Pattern says 12 rows, I think mine is more like 20 as a guess. Thanks ladies for the compliments.

Below is that cowl pattern, the link is not working. The changes for the yarn sizes are listed in the pattern, which is handy. I used an H crochet hook for the worsted weight yarn. It is a free pattern. I think I did close to 30 extra chains to get the length to 29 inches. I also have a few more rows on the body to get it to the width I liked.
Materials:
I hook, 5.5 MM
Super bulky (6) yarn (I used Isaac Mizrahi Craft in “Carlyle”), about 140 yards, a little over a skein
Bulky (5) yarn such as Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn
Abbreviations:
sc- single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
st(s)- stitch(es)
BLO- back loops only
FLO- front loops only
sl st- slip stitch

The pattern:
Ch 80 for super bulky weight yarn (size 6), ch 86 for bulky weight yarn (size 5), Ch 98 for medium worsted weight yarn (size 4).
It’s ok if you need a few more or less stitches, so long as the foundation chain measures 29#8243;.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from the hk and each st across.
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in BLO in each st across.
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in FLO in each st across.
Rows 4-10 (for super bulky yarn), 4-12 (for bulky and medium worsted weight yarn) : Repeat rows 2 and 3.
Sewing:
Position the scarf so one side goes over the other side coming to a point in the front. I always try it on in a mirror first to make sure the fit is just what I like before sewing.
Once you have it positioned where you like, sew through both layers at 3 points: on each corner where the top part of the scarf overlaps and on the other side. Weave in ends.
Edging:
Pick up a loop anywhere around the edging of the scarf and sc 81 for super bulky weight, 87 for bulky weight yarn, 90 for medium worsted weight yarn (doesn’t have to be exact but needs to be a multiple of 3) evenly around (sc through both overlapping areas). Sl st in last st.
Row 1: *Ch 5, skip next 2 sts, sl st in next st,* repeat from * around, ending with ch 5.
Row 2: Sl st in first ch 5 space, ch 5 sts, *sl st in next ch 5 space, ch 5 sts,* repeat around, ending with ch 5.
Rows 3: *Sl st in next ch 5 space, ch 5 sts,* repeat around, ending with ch 5.
***Fasten off and weave in end here for super bulky weight yarn. For bulky and medium weight yarn continue with rows 4 and 5.***
Rows 4-5: repeat row 2. On row 5 end with a sl st into the first ch 5 space and fasten off. Weave in end.
You’re done! Great job! You can keep the collar straight or roll it over for a different look. Either way you’ll look great!

The pattern that comes up when I go to that link uses a bulky yarn. It looks similar, just a lot heavier. I like yours with the worsted yarn. Where is the pattern for the worsted yarn?
