Posted - Feb 17 2020 : 2:35:30 PM Recently I read a comment posted on the Sewing/Crafting section, posted by Darlene aka Healing Touch... it reads: ""I just got finished watching YouTube. So many ideas. So I went through my yarn and decided since I have baby blue yarn, I started a baby blanket to give to the crisis pregnancy center. I either give them there or one of the hospitals. I have yellow, white, more baby blue and baby variegated so I can make a few more of them. Every year our church collects baby bottles that we put money in to support the center. Good cause. Helps mothers that decide to keep their babies and need the help and support."""
What/how do you ladies feel about us having a virtual club here on the MJF Forum to sew/quilt/crochet or knit baby blankets or lap quilts/blankets for Vets, shut-ins or charity of your choice?? Then when ever convienent, you would drop off the items at the charity of your choice.. ex: I would drop mine off at the Battered Women with children Shelter.. We could pop in daily~weekly to tell about our progress,, ask for tips,, even show and tell what we have completed.. No rules, no time frames.. just make a blanket when you can and donate it,, or wait till you have several blankets and then drop them off were they will do the most good.. Maybe check in with a local church or quilting group to see if they have a group of like minded ladies.
What do you think?

Posted - Feb 23 2020 : 10:22:05 AM Darlene, I cried when I read your post, via Grace's suggestion. My mother went through chemo& radiation and was blessed by people like you, Grace and others on here. I've been praying a lot for an outreach of some sort to participate in. I thought it was teenage outreach because of the troubled kids who come over and hang out at our place (great fishing pond ;)) but I'd like to participate here in this as well, in honor of my mom who passed with lung cancer. Maybe I'll donate to the hospice center since they took such great care of her and my dad.
God bless you and every other heart on here. I'm humbled as well as inspired. How I miss my mom!!!

Posted - Feb 21 2020 : 8:00:32 PM It hurts my heart and I can't walk away if I can do something for someone. We can't do everything but we can do something, right? We all reach our hands out. Some to take and some to give. We prefer to give and the blessings we give flow back to us abundantly! So glad to know all of you and call you my sisterfriends!

Posted - Feb 21 2020 : 2:00:26 PM Bonnie and Darlene,,, it takes such little effort to show love and compassion... It breaks my heart that so many families find it easier to 'dump' their family member into a care facility,, and never visit yet complain about the cost of nursing homes... as for the elderly folks who live alone in their home/apartment.. something as simple as a pair of warm socks, a gentle holding of their hand,, a patient voice means sooo very much. And yes,, doing their laundry too.. unlike a hundred plus years ago when doing laundry took up half or more of the day.. there is no excuse to not toss some clothes in the washer and 45min later into the dryer.. A simple action.. means so much and provides so much comfort physically and emotionally..

Posted - Feb 21 2020 : 12:33:12 PM Bonnie, how sweet! At such a devastating time to be blessed with a memory blanket! When I had no hair I was a recipient of the hats someone made. Much appreciated too! I didn't get a wig and they were a God send for sure. Our church made lap quilts that I distributed all over.
Grace, at the end of my nursing career I worked in nursing homes and with dementia patients. The need is great for caring hearts, a hug, a card, a visit, a small gift to let them know someone sees them and cares. I would take socks, blankets, decorations, snacks if they could have them or anything I thought I could do for them. But for the Grace of God go we!
One time when I doing home care, I had a couple that had such needs. I was there on a nursing visit only. When I looked in the refrigerator there was nothing but Meals on Wheels bags. Then I checked their laundry etc. To make a long story short, I went home and had my then teenage son give me any pants and tops he didn't want. I gathered sheets, blankets and food. The next day I changed their beds, washed their clothes and gave them both relaxing baths. Stocked some food and went for their prescriptions. One of the other nurses complained that I did to much and everyone would soon have to do it! I said, well if you can walk in someone's house and see a need and walk out, that's you but it's not me! The agency stopped sending me so often because they said I was doing to much. I got a flat rate if I was there 15 minutes or 3 hours! The elderly are forgotten, of which many of us on this forum belong!
Thanks to all of us that can do our part. Don't forget our Veteran's homes! Keep posting ladies, the need is great!

Posted - Feb 20 2020 : 7:56:21 PM Darlene and Grace...God Bless you for what you do. I made six tiny quilt tops for a hospital for when premies die. They stamp the babies hands and feet and put the name and date on them and then give them to the grieving parents. I also sewed hundreds of hats for cancer patients. Our quilt guild also sews many things for others. There is so much good that we can do to comfort others.

Posted - Feb 20 2020 : 7:26:15 PM Oh Darlene,, Bless your heart.. what wonderful ideas you are sharing with us.. Yes, to often 'Shut-ins' the elderly people do not have visitors or very few.
They so appreciate any friendship shared with them. Holding their hand, sharing a smile, listening to their stories doesn't cost a thing. It's true,, a smile is Free..

Posted - Feb 20 2020 : 3:40:32 PM Grace, thank you for starting this forum. The crisis center is a great idea. The tie quilts are faster and warm. Here's another thought. I used to take items to local nursing homes and assisted livings. Some residents never have any visitors or correspondence with anyone. The activity dept. always plays bingo and need prizes. Puzzle books, pens, lotion, perfume, aftershave, hair supplies, socks and holiday items. Food and candy a no no. Just call the facility and see what their policies are. Walmart has the small lotions etc. I had my grandsons make mitten name signs for all the residents one Christmas. I wanted them to see the importance of doing something for others. I have 2 friends that own assisted living facilities and I'm going to see if our Sunday School kiddos can address Easter cards to them. Keep the ideas coming! It's great.

Posted - Feb 20 2020 : 08:36:55 AM Yep,, I like the tie blankets,, they are easy and quick and wash up lovely...
I forgot to mention,, some of the sewers/quilters attached little 'pockets' to their blankets and tucked in a love note... how sweet is that.

Posted - Feb 19 2020 : 9:53:18 PM Grace, I love this idea. I would definitely have to look into places around me that accept baby blanket donations and see what I can whip up. I agree with Nini though. The tie blankets would probably be easier for me as well since crocheting a blanket would take me quite awhile.

Posted - Feb 19 2020 : 11:37:13 AM I think I will donate to our local shelter for battered women w/children... There is a 'Safety House' (location is kept secret} where victims are taken off to in an emergency situation... These women and children literally leave with only the clothes they are wearing.. So along with 'love quilts' that I plan to make, I will also be gathering and donating women's clothes....
I found this sweet unfinished little 36x36 lap top quilt,, I launderd it, and finished it.. I will now work on another quilt,, once I have several quilts and several bags of clothing I will make arraingements for the donation.

Posted - Feb 18 2020 : 06:48:58 AM Grace, I'm glad you posted this because I was going to post more of the things I do to give some ideas so I'll post right here. Whenever I pass an appropriate place I stop and deliver items. It started when I was getting chemo myself. The nurse in me was looking at the others getting chemo, while I was getting mine, and trying to nurse them. Can't take the nurse out of me no matter what! LoL! It doesn't matter how little or how much you have to give. Someone will always benefit from it. I pray over the items and know God will choose the appropriate recipriant. I choose to give anonymously. They are always thankful. We are blessed so we need to be a blessing. What better way then through a grateful Farmgirl heart. I make : Prayer pillows, scarfs, bookmarks, receiving blankets, afghans, lap robes, pens with flowers on top and beaded crosses and Angels. Not all at once! LoL! I take: Books and Bibles that I pick up at the library, used book store or thrifts. Always take encouraging cards with tea bags in them. They go to: Chemo centers, nursing homes and maternity wards and the pregnancy crisis centers. Kids chemo centers: Pillows, blankets and small little hand pillows. They like to hold them while getting procedures done. No used books here due to germs. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
BTW I just started this on Sonday at my church. I call it Tea Time Prayers Not everyone wants to put everything on prayer chains for various reasons sooooooo I handed out teabags to certain people and told them when they drink it to please pray for me, as I would be praying for them this week. No details required. God knows the details, everyone else doesn't need to know them. It was a hit! This week I will write my name on one side and someone else's name on the other side to be prayed for during the week. Anyone can hand a tea bag to anyone and have prayer during the week. Domestic violence, other abuses, illnesses, family matters still need prayer but don't need to be broadcast to the world. I let you know how it continues. Even 2 men took tea.
We can all do something. We are a caring and talented group! XoXoXo Darlene

Posted - Feb 17 2020 : 10:44:46 PM My quilt guild donates quilts to convalescent homes, chemo wards, and the orphanages. Members are expected to donate at least a quilt a year for charity. I've donated 22 or 23 over the last seven years. We have a community sew day twice a year when we make quilts, pillowcases, and Christmas stockings.

Posted - Feb 17 2020 : 6:05:52 PM Grace, it's funny you mention this. I have been making baby blankets since before Christmas for our local pregnancy center. I was going through my stash and had all this baby yarn odds and ends. I looked online to find then as they were local to us in town. I am glad I looked and called because they had moved. So when I told my daughter she made a few and brought them over and I finished up mine and took 7 or 8 blankets down there. They were thrilled to get them so I decided to continue making them. I used to do it years ago when my kids were in school and I had time for it. Then I would take them to church and one of the women there who volunteered at the hospital would take them in with her to donate to the maternity ward. She said some of the young girls with babies didn't have anything to take the baby home in except for a t shirt diaper and these blankets. What seems so little to some of us is not to someone else. I think you have a wonderful idea!
