Posted - Oct 21 2019 : 6:31:25 PM I had at one time well over 2 dozen sewing (mostly vintage) machines... I sold a few several years ago,, but I still have 17,, including 2 embroidery machines, 1 Serger and the rest...
I was bummed when my feather weight 'hiccupped,, I dropped it off at the Shop for repairs and picked it up today.. and it sews like a dream again...
In the mean time I decided to play with a couple of my other machines...
404A
403A I also have a 306W in a carry case...but I forgot to take a photo.
I thought you'd enjoy seeing this one,, it is by the National Sewing company,, made especially for Montgomery Wards.. it is what was called a 3/4 machine. A tad larger then a Feather weight and a tad small then a regular machine,, but let me tell you,, it is heavy!
I have several in their cases and 2 more in Consoles out in the barn. One of these days I will get around to photographing them all, including my grandma's 1908 White foot treadle machine .. I use to have a sewing studio and was able to display them all along with 3 vtg ironing boards and my antique Iron collection.. Wish I had kept everything, but when you move outta state you have to be practical! Bummer!

Posted - Nov 02 2019 : 1:22:39 PM It's funny... my daughter has no interest in my vintage collections (machines, irons, aprons, Lucite grapes to name few.).. but... my sister's daughter is all about vintage everything,, from clothing to house décor.. I mentioned my collections to her, to bait her, to see if she would be the 'Keeper' of my collections,, and YES she is and will be. SO I am happy they will have a future home, once I am old and goofy... But for now,, mine,,, all mine!!!

Posted - Oct 31 2019 : 12:43:25 PM Winnie, if you are ever in my neck of the woods stop by and I'll give you a treadle machine. They are lovely to use--there is rhythm to them that is almost meditation. Most of my machines are in running order. I have a few favorites; one handcrank I keep in our trailer up in the hills (no electricity) and I usually get a quilt top done every year on it. I have been slowly rehoming them as my kids have no interest in them at all. My favorites are machines made by Jones in England. Most of their models were based on Singer patents but far better made then Singer. Singer made the most machines but not the best. Most old machines will work if cleaned, oiled, have the needle set right and are properly threaded. One of my favorites; it is just so cute but it also sews a nice stitch. It's a c1870 New Home:

Posted - Oct 31 2019 : 11:07:53 AM WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Judith, what a glorious museum of vintage machines you have in your sewing room!! Do you use a few of them for fun or do you have a favorite that works best for you? I just have my Mom's machine, but I really would love to find a treadle one because my Grandma had one and I remember watching her sew on it and found it so intriguing. These days, I really just need simple and a treadle would be nice to learn how to use.
Nicole, do you have a favorite machine? What do you use the most when you wish to sew stuff like repairs or simple stuff?

Posted - Oct 31 2019 : 07:09:01 AM At last count, I have over 35 vintage sewing machines. I should really take an inventory. This is counting the ones I sew on, treadles, “toy machines” and the ones that are “shelf sitters” - too far gone or missing parts but with cool graphics, etc. I have them spread out through the house. Several were given to me. After the two articles I wrote on collecting vintage sewing machines on the Suburban Farmgirl Blog, and the one I wrote in MaryJanesFarm magazine, several times machines were just “dropped off”. I would come home and the VSM fairy would have been here with one on my porch. Some I still do not know who the elf was. The last one given to me was by a friend who was moving. He and I graduated from the Master Gardener program together. It had been his grandmother’s machine, a treadle. He and his wife could not fit it anywhere in their new home, and they felt it was too far to take. The kids didn’t want it, so they asked me to take it. It is the prettiest cabinet I have ever seen, in perfect condition. The treadle part looks great. I still need to work on the machine, but we had no more room really for a cabinet! So...it now sits closed and on top is my daughter’s pet snake aquarium!
I guess I should take an inventory. I was working on an index of them...with their models, bobbin type, serial numbers. I will get back to it once winter settles in. My favorite machines to sew on are still my featherweights and the 485J. My favorite to look at is the one that does sew beautifully (but I hurt my back moving it once) that is a White from the early 60’s in turquoise. I love the color and it is the model my dad bought my mom when they were newlyweds and she taught me to sew on.

Posted - Oct 28 2019 : 2:14:13 PM Way back when my daughter needed a confirmation dress and I had put it of until the day before the event. I woke up that morning ready to do some serious sewing and a big storm hit and we were without power. I dusted off the treadle, oiled it up, and the dress was made in time. Since then I have done a lot of sewing on people powered machines. I love them. No fancy stitches but most my sewing is just straight sewing so I don't miss all the bells and whistles. I have about a dozen or so quilts that were pieced on hand crank or treadle machines.

Posted - Oct 28 2019 : 05:13:04 AM WOW, kAT!! I only have one, I must be doing something wrong. Of course I have to remember I can't sew like you, I probably don't even need one. Where do you keep them all? Oh I forgot I have an old 1900 singer treadle. Its in my back entry way, it was Richard's Grandmothers. Happy sewing! Nancy Jo

Posted - Oct 27 2019 : 4:39:13 PM Grace, those photos of that first machine look similar to the one I inherited from my Mom, a 1957 Singer in a table with two side drawers for notions. It still works well and does all sorts of stitches. I remember my Mom was so pleased with it because of the variety of stitches she could make as trims. I just use the basic functions and I love that I have it and happy that it seems to keep plugging along for me. My little sewing area is actually part of a tiny laundry room. If I had more space, I have always wanted a little Singer Treadle machine like my Grandma sewed on.

Posted - Oct 26 2019 : 12:36:12 PM Grace, I still use my Singer Futura for my buttonholes. Easiest buttonholer that I have ever used.

Posted - Oct 25 2019 : 3:17:53 PM The easiest and best-looking buttonholes are made with the old buttonhole attachment for singer low shank sewing machines. I believe they were also made for the slant needle models like the 500. If you have any Singer model 15, 28, 66, 99, 201, 221 (featherweight), it will work. It will also work on any other manufacturer that has a low shank machine. Absolutely the easiest and most bestest way to make buttonholes. They can be found on eBay for a reasonable price.

Posted - Oct 25 2019 : 12:28:37 PM I am looking for a machine that has a super easy to use, button hole maker.. my last Brother was super easy to make button holes,, then I got a Singer,, oh my stars! what a pain in the bhootay, so I got rid of it.! I go back and forth from my feather weight to my Brother CS6000i I mostly use my Brother for fancy trim stitching, like I use on my pillow case trims.

Posted - Oct 25 2019 : 07:35:21 AM Nice to know that I'm not the only one that loves sewing machines. I currently only have four. My Bernina (my dh got it for me for Christmas about 5 years ago) My Singer Futura that I have had since 1976, My 1953 Featherweight and my Minnesota treadle sewing machine (just because you never know when the electric is out and you just have to sew something).

Posted - Oct 24 2019 : 7:05:10 PM Well, I killed my Pfaff - it would cost more to fix than to buy a new one so it just sits. I like the Janome; it is the newest machine I have. I haven't used all the bells and whistles it has, but it is easy to use. It does a LOT of stitches, and I like the buttonholer attachment.
I have a sears in a cabinet, the 401 in a cabinet, and the tables for the 301 and the featherweight (the featherweight table was my mother's).

Posted - Oct 24 2019 : 6:52:08 PM I love my Bernina; It's my only "modern" sewing machine. It was pricey but on sale so I took the plunge. I've had it six or seven trouble-free years. My newest machine before this Bernina was a 1970 model. Still have it.
