I just got some fabric on sale and a pattern I love for making myself a few skirts for spring. I plan to make a couple patchworkish type too, with fabric from my sizeable stash. I look forward to skirt weather...it is still pretty cold here. I do wear skirts some on cold days..but much much more in summer. I like solid color tops with pretty print skirts. I even got some white for making a long petticoat. We will see if I really wear it..but I got it..so you never know.

I bet barkcloth for a skirt is wonderful, it has such a nice hand to it, and you don't need a slip. I hope you'll post a picture, Jenny. I have some cobalt linen I want to make a summer jumper out of. I actually bought a pattern for this one, usually I just wing it, but I figure since my cloth is so nice I should try to make something that doesn't look too sloppy.

I am going to make myself a new thin cotton slip for summer out of some batiste and then I have this fantasy of making crochet lace around the bottom. That will be a lot of crocheting for me, it takes a lot of cloth to cover me...

Vanessa over at V and Co. posted a tutorial on how to make a cute skirt from a tablecloth, but it could work easily for fabric, too.

Here's the link:

I did end up getting one skirt finished and I love it...all florals ..bark cloth in different sizes...alot of soft greens, browns and creams with touches of color. I love it and wore it all day today. I got out homespun to make another over the weekend..maybe two. I plan to cut more squares tomorrow.
Jeannie..I used to make those skirts alot! I should make some for my girls this summer with those jeans that are just a little bit too short for them but still fit in the waist..youngest daughter has THAT problem.
It is fun to know that we are all out there making our farmgirls skirts for summer wear!!

I have made skirts of old jeans. I take wide leg jeans, cut them apart up the inside legs, and then do a crazy quilt type insert on both sides. It depends on the jeans if it comes out looking and hanging good. But I love skirts, long skirts, and love it when warm weather comes, because they look best with sandals. However, I do wear them with boots too.

Well, Jenny, I shamelessly plagerized some of your ideas and combined them with some of my own to come up with a new skirt this afternoon. I took a pair of jeans that were worn out - holes in the legs, and cut off the top right above the crotch. Then I took some homespun I had on hand, (your idea) and cut a couple of lengths of it. Then I took scraps of blue and cream fabric I had on hand, plus a little blue and dark red for spice, and cut them into 5" strips. Then I cut the five inch strips into random widths and sewed them together to make a patchwork (your idea) ruffle for the bottom of the homespun and gathered the top of the homespun and sewed the whole thing to the cut off jeans. Voila! A comfy homesteady patchwork jean skirt that used up some scraps! Thank you very much for your inspiration!

I love to sew in the summer too mostly because in my house it is too cold to move away from the woodstove in the winter...HA HA.

Jenny sorry I did get back in time to respond to your search for the peasant skirt link...glad you got it anyway!

I agree!! I love to sew in summer. I plan to maybe go fabric shopping tomorrow...and then also do a patchwork skirt with what I have on hand. I have a vision in my head of what I want..just need to see if I have THAT fabric!! haha. I have some homspun in navy/cream that I want to use as part of a skirt for sure. I love how it feels..all cottony and soft after washing.

Cute! I'm on a sewing roll this last couple of days. DH moved to swing shift, so I'm spending hours in my sewing room. In the last two days I have made a jumper and two skirts for my business and a blouse, a skirt and a jumper for me! Summer clothes are so much more fun to sew!

Jenny, Maybe something like this would work?

I did make the peasant skirt last night out of the material I was itching to use, it was very easy and came out great!

Aunt Jenny Posted - Jun 02 2009 : 2:39:06 PM
Thanks so much for posting the peasant skirt link..I will be making some for sure. I have just about worn out my two favorite skirts..one is chambray about that same style and another is a lightweight denim with a cute embroidered edge on the bottom...not as "flippy" as my daughter would call the peasant style. I like "flippy" myself! I have some fabric I love, but not enough for skirts..I will just use it all maybe! I have had my eye on some patch work type skirts..too expensive for me right now..I will just make my own maybe...that style..but maybe make the long strips of fabric from more than one ...so you get even more of a peasanty look going, right? Perfect garden skirt!!
I will have to check out that simplicity pattern too, Sherri!!

One pattern I like to use is Simplicity 5597. Fits well, it's easy and I like the little inset flare thing in the front of view A. Sorry, can't get the link up now, my computer's acting up, but it's discontinued but there are a lot of them available if you do a search.

I'd like to have a pattern for a midcalf, full skirt. Doesn't sound like it would be hard to find but I haven't found any...

I have been planning on wearing cotton skirts this summer too, and have been getting them where ever I can find them, and I bought some beautiful material (that was on sale!) to make a couple but I'm having trouble finding a pattern I like, so if anyone has any suggestions post them here!
mikesgirl Posted - Jun 02 2009 : 07:37:47 AM
If you find it Jenny, please post a link. I looked for it yesterday after I saw MaryAnn's post, but I couldn't find it!

I will soon be having knee surgery (not sure exactly when...will talk to doc again on Friday about it) and I KNOW skirts will be my answer. I am already wearing them most days all day again now. That or my overalls. I don't have the legs for shorts..haha.

Thanks for inspiring skirt "talk".
I re-injured my knee & the Dr. told me to wear the brace directly on skin with shorts. Now I have the body of a 47 women who's had 7 children. I don't wear shorts above my knees. So I need to start where skirts instead. A great reason to dig into the stash & makes some to even wear working in the garden.

Oh Jenny!! How wonderful.. I just sorted out a bunch of fabric to make some skirts too!!I tend to spend a few weeks cutting patterns so that I have plenty to choose from and then I can pick up a sewing project whenever I want. The problem I have now...3 kids....I don't have quality time to sew..so I sew in snippets..a seam here.. a button hole there.. Eventually I get a garment made. I'm happy with that...before I know it, I'll have plenty of time to sew more often and my kids will be grown!!!!!!!!! Take some pictures and let us see your work!!
many happy smiles to you
