Ok gals, I'm working with our local fire department to help them with their new animal rescucitation mask kits...Basically, it's a nylon type bag that holds a mask etc. to save pets in housefires and carbon monoxide poisioning cases. The bags are black, and they wanted an emblem that "stands out" so when in need, the visual association aids in picking out the bag...He was thinking a paw print--embroidered? Or heavy duty transfer? I have heavy duty transfer paper, and that way I could control the design, size and color. I have a commercial iron that heats up to 500 degrees--but the material of the bag might be an issue, and it would have to be durable, getting thrown around in a truck and being wet. We only need 3 to start, and the embroidered paw prints that I've been able to find are so small in dimension. Color is a factor--it would need to be bright.

What about custom embroidery? I don't know how expensive it would be to do the "set up", and for such a minimal amount of patches at first, it might defeat the purpose, since the kits are being paid for by a rescue with donated money.
Eventually, the goal is to get all area Fire Depts. equipped with these kits, so there will be more, but it depends on the funding the rescue (who is donating the bags) gets....

Anyone have experience with ordering custom embroidery or know someone who has one of the embroidery sewing machines? Any help you can give is much appreciated--I think this would be a great thing for our area firehouses, and our pets.

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

Jonni, that's not a stupid question at all!
Stitch Witchery is fusible webbing. It comes by the yard or pre-packaged. It has paper on both sides and you peel the paper off of one side only, place it face down(remaining paper side up) on the wrong side of your fabric and iron it down. Then you can cut out whatevr shape you want out of your fabric/fusible piece, then you peel the other paper off and place it where you want it on your project and iron it down. You can finish the edges with satin stitching or embroidery or just leave it as-is (I always sew it down with a satin stitch)...the fusible 'glues' the fabric edges down to -mostly- prevent fraying. You'll get a bit of it on the very edge, but it doesn't go very far.

Thanks, gals....all great ideas. Faithymom, I've never used stitchwitchery...not to sound stupid, but what is that? I will also check into the fabric paint--florescent makes good sense, and I can even "write" with that, too.

Yep, Katmom--I have seven pets (4 dogs, 3 cats) all inside animals and I would be absolutely devastated if I lost them in a fire, or couldn't revive them. Do check--to my knowledge, the actual kits themselves cost about $150.00. It would be a good project for a ladies aux group, or youth group at church to fund raise for.

Jonni,
What a GREAT idea, I am going to check with our local Fire Dept., to see if they have ambu bags for our 4-legged friends....Thanxs for the life saving idea.
Let me know what you come up with as for the "logo" on the bags for the fire crew to see at a glance. I think I may check in with one of our Womens Auxilary groups to see if they will fund the embroidering costs. I have 4 fur babies & would feel better knowing that our local fire dept., had these life saving ambu bags.

I've done several of these projects for local fire departments and you're right, it does have to be durable! Custom embroidery tends to be really REALLY expensive, as you generally pay by the thread count. I got someone to screenprint the ones I did and it worked out great and was fairly cheap. Faith's suggestion of fabric paints is a good one though, particularly if you only need three to start with and the color selection is unlimited. Come to think of it, you could probably do three of them for under $2.

What about using your iron to applique a design on there with Stitch Witchery and then satin stitch the raw edges?
Then you still can control the size of the design.

You could also try some of the fabric paints and paint it on.
I know they have flourescent colors and glow-in-the-dark colors, too.
You could make a stencil out of cardboard (I'd use a cereal box) and stencil it on.
I think that would be more durable and quicker than sewing.

You might be able to get it donated ( the embroidery) if you tell the company that has an embroidery machine what you are doing. they might even get a tax deduction or write off you would have to look into that as a charitable donation.
