I recently bought a great find from the thrift store, a queen size down feather bed for $20!!! Well, our mattress is a full size so the feather bed hangs over the edges too much to cover with a fitted sheet so I was thinking that I could just get a duvet cover to stick this featrher bed in and use it as a heavy comforter. Well, since it's supposed to fit on the mattress, there are no duvet covers that would fit, so I was thinking I could make one by starting with a couple nice sheets, and at the top, in stead of a zipper closure, having some kind of flaps that would button down on the top. Something kind of country looking...of course. But I'm not the greatest seamstress, I can use the sewing maching pretty good, but I dont know what else I should do other than sew sheets together.
Anyone have any cute ideas of pictures of something I could do. It's gotta be pretty simple!

Jana, Ive seen this book!!! And couldnt figure out if I should get it. Sounds like it might be a good one though.

I found a wonderful book by Celine Dupuy called "Simple Sewing with a French Twist" and there are instructions in there for making a duvet cover. And LOTS of other sewing projects. Its a thick paperback and I couldn't resist. LOTS of cute stuff!

This is a great topic folks. I bought a used king size feather bed awhile ago for a real bargain price and have been wondering what to do with it ever since. We don't have a king-size bed, but I was thinking I could make down pillows or whatnot. The idea to use it as a duvet is SPENDID. Especially since it was a tiny fraction of the cost of a down comforter.
Now I'm off to find some discounted sheets!

When I hung this thing on the line to air out when I brought it home, it fluffed up to be about 6 inches thick! We heat with only the woodstove, so sometimes we wake up at 4 am and it's rather chilly. We have oil for back up heat, but we try really hard not to use it. Plus we live in such a rural area that the power goes out a lot, so if it ever did and we needed the extra warmth in the winter, we'd stay warm. But my husband does make a rather snuggly "wife-warmer" :)
That's what I was thinking about bramble!! What a great idea! I'm looking on ebay right now to see if I can find a cheap duvet cover to make smaller.
I just saw the recycled quilt post, and thought of something else. I have a great quilt, but the lining on the backside is pretty worn, so I could just patch the backside, and sew a sheet onto the backside, and just make a tie down flap type closure at the top, and then it will be pretty. |

Here's another thought...if the thrift store has a queen or king size duvet cover that you like, buy it! It will probably be cheaper than buying fabric or multiple sheets. Now here is the easy part....
Turn the duvet cover inside out and spread out on a flat surface (floor), place the tick on it and mark out the perimeter that you need to stitch. Give a couple inches leaway so you can make sure you don't flatten out all those good feathers! Make sure you use the insert side as your top (you won't have to re-sew it!) and most likely if you position it correctly you will only have a side and bottom seam to sew. Easy peasy and DONE! I have done this a few times!

That is all we use here on the beds in Saint Laurent, duvets and they are luxuriously warm without the weight of regular blankets or quilts. What a wonderful thrift store find!! Good luck with the project. Nance |

Cristine, It is very simple! It's just straight seams and then whatever closure you're putting on it.

If you use fabric instead of sheets, you'll need to piece it to get the right width. It looks good if you use a main piece in the center and complimentary pieces at the sides.

The one thing my mom does that I haven't seen on a lot of the instructions is to sew ties at the inside corners of the cover to hold the duvet in place while it's being used. At each of the 4 corners she sews a 10 inch piece of ribbon, sewing it down at the center mark. Then when you put the cover on, you just use these and tie them around the corners of the duvet and it stays where it's supposed to. I have seen snap tape sections that are meant for this.
