A about a year or so ago I put an ad out in Grit magazine simply looking for information on Bobbin Lace. Well, as luck would have it, I ended up getting 2 kits and a few books on the subject!

But, I am finding it extremely difficult to learn. I knew it would be hard (someone told me it was the hardest craft she ever tried to learn!) but hot dog! It is REALLY hard!

I have tried online learning with it, through the books, and still nothing. I believe that this may be something I have to learn from a teacher in person or through Skype.

Anyone else out makin' bobbin lace? How did you learn? Any groups or teachers in America? I know this art is basically on its last heartbeat, but at 27 I have to believe that I can keep it going just a little!

When I was young, my parents were involved in a medieval recreation group (well, they still are...). I hated hanging with the group - it wasn't my thing, but I did learn a lot of fun crafts and such. One of them was bobbin lace. At one time, I had a pillow and bobbins and my mom, sister and I worked on lace making. It's been years since I did it though!

I think you can learn it, Brianna. Relax and give your self permission to take your time. Years ago I met a woman who each year taught this craft to third graders. What!!! I couldn't believe it either. I always wanted to contact her for instruction but never did. Now, I am so sorry. I hope you keep at it!

Wow that is impressive.

Hi Brianna
Like Roxanne, I saw a demo at a RenFaire years ago. I asked the artist if it is hard to learn. She told me you have to get a rhythm and kadense going. Good luck with your project. So far it looks awesome!

I first heard of bobbin lace at my local RenFest a few years back and they portray their craft every year. That may be a resource you can tap.

I don't know how to do bobbin lacing, but that sure does look impressive, especially the fact that you did a beautiful corner! Not sure if this will help, but I just looked up "bobbin lace society" and came up with these:

Thanks for all the info! I heard a rumor that someone about an hour south of me knows how to do this. I am not sure who she is or WHERE she is but the nice thing about tiny communities is that word travels fast and someone will most likely know her or know of her :) Until then, I am going to keep trying to learn online. Maybe something will click!

I love the look of bobbin lace. I bought a kit a couple of years ago but have yet to try it. I have always wanted to keep crafts like this alive also. Maybe one day, I will drag it all out and try it. I already love quilting and tatting.
