I went to my first sock knitting class last night!! It was fun, but my brain hurt when I left. It was a lot of info in two hours, but if I sit down with it again today I'm sure it will come to me. I made a few mistakes, but I know what I did wrong in order to correct it. She started us out on practice yarn. I ripped out what I had done last night and re-casted everything on this morning to give it another try. I want to make sure feel fairly comfortable with it before I move on to my expensive yarn. I'll take a picture of my progress at the end of the day and post it on my blog. I can't wait to have my first pair of socks. There sure were some beautiful yarns there last night!!

Margie... I really think you can do it with my instructions that are on that site. They seem so detailed! I'm sure if you get stuck, the girls here can walk you through it and I bet even those yarn shops would help if you needed it. I have found that people really are eager to share their crafts with others.
Missy, I was nervous about "turning the heal" it sounded complicated but if you just take on row at a time, it magically turns out right. It's amazing really!

I am on the page and printing off everything.....may have to buy more ink, but if it gets me started I am there...it may be "cheaper" than a plane ticket to Minneapolis.....
I will let you all know how I am doing..... Catherine, just in case I have trouble, hang an old sock outside your door so I can find your house...

I've gotten the cuff and heel flap done. That's all she showed us last time. Thursday night(weather permitting) I have my second class and she'll show us how to finish it up. Was the heal really confusing? I'm a little nervous about figuring that part out. Can't wait to see pics!!

Missy, I had to give you an update! I was at my knitting group today I have nearly finished my first sock! I only have the toe to do and have looked at the directions and it doesn't look too bad! How are you doing on yours? Let us know. Cindy

Margie! I wish I could come over to your house and teach you to knit socks right away today. It's really not hard! Click on this link below and follow it along. If you have your yarn and needles, then you're all set to dig in. This is an incredibly detailed pattern (something like 21 pages) and it has pictures for every step of the way.

I say, GO FOR IT! My mom knit a cabled sweater for her very first (and only) knitting project back in the 60s. Who is to say that you CAN'T do socks early on? (They're really not that hard!!!)

I am reading all this lovely news about sock knitting and I could just scream...(not loud).. I have been wanting to learn to knit socks for a year and every place I called said" Well, first you will have to knit a baby sweater (my baby is 37 and is the size of Hulk Hogan) there is not enough wool to make him a sweater...Then "we" will knit a scarf (I already have 12 knitted scarfs) and last "we" will see about knitting socks......Ain't that a kick in the butt.. I have read and looked at all your blogs and they are beautiful, but here I sit with Still no socks to knit...I have the wool, needles and 3 pattrens, but no teacher.....

Missy, I'm awestruck by your sox! I finally went to a class last year and started a pair but I really need hands-on help AFTER the classes as I go along. Maybe when we get together we can do it together . Sure would be fun!

thanks Cindy!! It's fun to see how the stipes come out while you're knitting. Just a little warning....soap making is just as addicting as knitting!! haha www.millersoap.com is a great sight for biginners and she has some good links to other sights. I'm actually thinking of doing a beginners soap making class here once a month. Too bad you're not closer, I would be happy to teach you!!

Missy, I went to your blog and snooped around a bit, LOVE your sock yarn! My Mother in law gave me a BAG of sock yarn and that is why I decided to make socks! I like her yarn but would like to choose my own at some point.
I took a peek at your chicken friends and found out that you make soap! I am dying to learn, maybe this summer!

Missy, I turned my heal last night and it was easier than I thought, I had no problems at all. I will need help with picking up the side again (Wed meeting) so I staarted the other sock. I really want to knit and since I'm stuck....I will work on the mate! Good luck and keep us posted! Cindy |

Thanks for the encouragement girls. The pattern she has us working on says to go 6" from the top of the cuff and then start the heel. Does that sound like it will be long enough? I'm only 3" into it so there's plenty of time to add more if I need to. I worked on it quite a bit this evening and will post a picture tomorrow. I prefer a sock with a little longer cuff as well. The yarn is a self striping with some pretty crazy colors in mostly wool. I get a kick out of wearing "unusual socks".
Cindy- that would be so fun to share our progress. My brain hurt a little by the time I left yesterday, but I'm already feeling pretty comfortable with what I have learned so far. Still feeling a little clumsy with all the needles, but I'm sure that will get better with time.
Catherine- I got the mitten pattern today!! Thank you so much and it's exactly what I was looking for. As soon as I get my socks done that will be my next project.

Missy I and working on my first pair too! I belong to a knitting group and am so new that scarves are the only thing I've done. Well, the rest are doing socks and said they would walk me through it with them. I have to admit that it doesn't come easily to me like other crafts but I am getting there! I am turning the heel now. Doesn't that sound HARD!! Please keep us posted and I will let you know how mine are going. The cuff seems to be a little small on mine and my husband noticed it too. I told him that if I EVER get them done I will loose weight so they will fit!!

I did the same thing on my first socks..so eager to get to that heel...my favorite pairs have a generous cuff!! I am not a wearer of short ankle socks anyhow..so I don't know what I was thinking on that first pair. You will do great Missy..isn't it fun????

I'm wearing my very first pair of handknit socks today...I knit them a few years ago and they're pretty good - albeit a little short on the cuff. Sock knitting is so fun! I'm glad that you are liking your class and just diving in. I can't wait to see your progress photos!
Catherine's Advice: Don't skimp on the cuff just because you are antsy to get to the heel!

just keep practicing, I went for years and could not GET IT, then all of a sudden it seemed like something kicked in and they are easy, and I really like doing the heel.
