Posted - Jul 29 2016 : 08:16:11 AM Each month a new block (or two) will be posted and a new thread will begin for each new month. I hope many of you will join in and we will have a lot of new quilts in 12 months or less.
You can join in at any time. We'd love to have you!

I am posting the August blocks a couple days early because I am going out of town and may not have access to Internet.
This month Amy (SongSparrow) chose our block(s) for August. You can either do one of them or both of them. Both blocks have been around for a long time. She also chose a 3rd block and I will call it the Challenge Block. It has a LOT of half-square triangles
Remember to use scant 1/4" seams when making these blocks.
For the beginner quilters she chose the Contrary Wife block, one that is very easy, and looks great. This will work very easily with stripes and plaids. The first block is called Squares Upon Squares. There are no triangles in this block - it is very easy. Here is the link: http://www.quilterscache.com/S/SquaresUponSquaresBlock.html And the other block is called Tennessee. http://www.quilterscache.com/T/TennesseeBlock.html
Helpful Hints for Tennessee block: Again, this block is similar to those we have done with half-square triangles. I suggest you make the half-square triangles as we have done on a couple patterns so far, by making individual squares instead of the strip. You can cut 5" squares of each of the fabrics you use instead of 4-7/8" and sew as shown in the pattern. NOTE: In my blocks I did not use triangles of 6 different fabrics, I used only three and made the half-square pieces the same on both sides of the block.
The challenge block is called Annie's Choice, and the link is below: http://www.quilterscache.com/A/AnniesChoiceBlock.html This block is entirely made up of half-square triangles, so be sure to watch your 1/4" seam allowances and make the starting squares 4" instead of 3-7/8".
Your blocks should measure 12-1/2" square when finished.
As always, have fun with these blocks and please post your blocks so we can all see what fabrics you are using. It is amazing that a different fabric choice or placement of light-dark fabrics can often really change the look of the blocks.
If you have any questions about the instructions, please ask here or email me and I will try to help you.

Posted - Jan 18 2017 : 08:18:34 AM Me, too! Any color goes in a scrappy. I also take smaller scraps and just keep sewing them on to each other until I get a larger piece, iron them, and then cut out 4-1/2" squares with all kinds of scraps in them. I have them in a box, and when I get a LOT of them I will sew them together and make a really scrappy quilt. Ill try to take some pictures of the squares and post them.

Posted - Aug 29 2016 : 12:02:39 PM Love them all, Sherry. Great job! Your challenge block is super.
I've got to make the challenge block still - I have leftover half square triangles from a quilt, so will use them to try the block. NOTE: The challenge block was one of the first ones Amy sent me, and I asked her to choose another for our newer quilters. The more pieces you have, the more seams there are, and the more chance of a block that is too small.
I also need to make the September blocks so they are ready to post. I may post the patterns a day or two before Sept 1, IF I get them done. LOL! September will have 2 challenge blocks.
