I am starting a block of the month (BOM) for anyone interested in making a new quilt. There will be no swapping involved; you will make the block in your own colors and keep the blocks you make. You can make as many or as few of the blocks as you want, and you will have a very nice quilt whenever you decide you have enough blocks. I will post ideas for different ways to sash and/or put together the blocks.

Here are the guidelines:
1. Once a month someone taking part in this swap will choose a 12" finished block pattern from www.quilterscache.com, where there are hundreds of patterns available. On this page (http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html) you go to the alphabetical listing of quilt blocks, where the block size is given for each, or a bit further down the page you can view pictures of blocks and go to the pattern link so you can copy it and post here. Please just make sure it is a 12" finished block. There are over 60 pages of blocks pictured.
2. On the first day of each month, the person choosing the pattern will post the link to the pattern page and the name of the pattern on this thread.
3. You will make this block in your own colors or themed fabrics, because you will be keeping the blocks you make.
4. As soon as you finish the block, you can post pictures of your blocks here so everyone can see what you are doing and we can see the differences in the fabrics people are using for their quilts.

Here are 3 BOM quilts I have made from blocks chosen by people in my small quilt group the past 3 years.

This was made for my boyfriend for Christmas last year. I made all the blocks using all brown fabrics in my blocks. I put the 12 blocks around a panel I purchased at a quilt shop. I did not sash the 12 blocks, but added a small brown border around the panel to make it conform to the size of the blocks. Then I added a piano key border at the top and bottom to make it a rectangle instead of a square, and then added another border to make it larger.

I made this quilt in 2014 from the 12 blocks people chose. I used all blue and white fabrics from my stash (my mother's favorite colors). I sashed this quilt in blue with white corner stones and added a blue border.

In 2013, I used 1930s fabrics for all my blocks and added 8 more blocks I had previously made to make a larger quilt. This is one I have been finishing up for my UFO merit badge. LOL! I sashed the blocks with a multi-color dots pattern fabric and added a red with flowers print border.

I hope many of you will join in on this BOM. Please also let me know if you would be interested in choosing a block and I will assign you a month. I will start with the first post of a block on May 1.

A lot of us are having fun with this BOM. We'd love to have more farm girls join in - you keep the blocks you make, so you can make a quilt or wall hanging or table runner when you decide you have enough. Make the blocks in your own colors.

It's never too late to join in. You can catch up with all the blocks posted so far (it started in May) by going to the BOM threads for each month.

That's great thanks. I have a collection of fabrics that I bought a few years ago with a quilt in mind. I'll use them.

Welcome, Jill. You can jump in any time. Since you will be keeping these blocks, you can make any you want. Please go to the Block 1 post to keep up. I will try to post little helpful hints along with the pattern(s) each month.

Is it too late to join? I've done a lot of sewing clothing, but only a couple of little quilted projects. This sounds like a manageable way to learn a new skill.

Linda, I'm gonna give this a try. I think of myself as an art-quilter (a fancy way of saying I'm not patient enough to try to measure perfectly so I just wing it!) but it looks like I don't have anything to risk by joining, since we're just swapping photos and chat. And the Lord knows I could quilt across my whole hometown with the fabrics I have collected! Count me in!

I looked through the patterns and have secretly chosen which ones I would pick when it's my turn. So many I would love to make. I am determined for 2016 to finish what I start :)

Question for all!

Would you prefer if I start a new thread each month so as the year progresses we have can easily find each month's block(s) and our results? If so, I will copy my May blocks post to another thread. Be sure to "Subscribe" to the post(s). This might make it easier to follow each month separately.

I am choosing my block(s) for May early - and yes, I am choosing 2 because you can either do one of them or both of them. For the beginner quilters I chose one that is super easy and one that is a tiny bit more complicated.

The first is Nine Patch Variation. This is all squares, no half-square triangles, and uses 3 colors or all scrappy. For beginner quilters, you can make the center 9-patch center square another 4-1/2" square to simplify, if you want.
http://www.quilterscache.com/N/NinePatchVariationBlock.html

The second is Mr. Roosevelt's Necktie. I have used this before and it turns out nice in 2-3 colors or scrappy.
HINT FOR BEGINNERS OR OTHERS: For the single 3-7/8" square in steps 1 and 2 that the directions say to cut in half, I find it easier to make those squares 4" instead of 3-7/8". First draw a diagonal line corner-to-corner on one of the squares, put the two squares right sides together, and stitch 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Then cut apart along the drawn line, press the squares, and trim them up to 3-1/2". I hope this helps.

Have fun with this. Thanks for joining in. Let's see your squares when you finish.

And if I have confused anyone, please let me know.

To answer someone's question about the fabrics for the Vintage Farmgirl's quilt, I love bright happy colors like Lori Holt. I have some of her fabrics and tons of my own. You can go on her website to see what the blocks look like. Happy quilting everyone.
