NOTE: Measurements of cut squares have been corrected. If you find any more errors, please let me know.

I am starting a thread that is the quilter's version of the knitted/crocheted Temperature Blanket thread that Ruthie posted. This is NOT a swap - you will be making this quilt for yourself, since the temperatures in your area would be different from other farmgirls.

You keep track of the temperatures for each day of 2016. There will be 366 days, and there are several ways you can make this quilt.

Each temperature range has a color (according to the charts on weather maps):
0 and below -pink
0-10-light purple
11-20-dark purple
21-30-dark blue
31-40-light blue
41-50-dark green
51-60-light green
61-70- bright yellow
71-80-orange
81-90-light red
90-100-dark red
over 100- burgundy
Or you can make up your own color chart.

Your quilt can just be squares of fabric that are predominantly one of the chart colors for that day. Or it could be made up of quilt blocks using different patterns. Each color could be a variety of scrappy fabrics, not only one fabric. Here are my quick brainstorm ideas (only suggestions), and I am considering to do one of these ideas:

Square a day
For one square a day that would be 366 blocks. A quilt with blocks cut 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square would yield a quilt 31x12 blocks which would make a wall-hanging of 62" x 24", which is quite a bit wider than long, but with 4-6" borders, this makes a great bed runner quilt. But if you use rectangles cut 2-1/2" x 5-1/2" (finished to 2"x5"), and place them with the 2-1/2" across the width, your quilt would be 62" x 60" before borders, a nice size for a bed quilt. You can cut your squares ahead of time from your stash and sort them in baggies according to the list of colors. Add a nice border and you have a wall-hanging or full- to queen-size quilt. This is probably the easiest.

Block-a-Week
Another idea for the quilt could be a block a week, which would be 52 blocks. Each block could be a combination of the temperature colors for the 7 days in that week. Some weeks might have mainly one color, other weeks up to 7. (LOL! Wouldn't that be a week!) It would be a scrappy quilt that could be 8 blocks x 7 blocks (with 4 neutral setting blocks in the corners) with each block being a different quilt pattern. If you want a wall-hanging you would make the blocks 4-1/2" unfinished, so they finish at 4" square. For a bed-size quilt, I'd probably make these blocks to finish at 10" square (10-1/2" unfinished), which would make the quilt 70" x 80" before adding a border. This would be easiest to use simple block patterns, but could be as complicated as you like. What a great sampler quilt.

Remember - you are on your own for this, but I'd love to see several farmgirls join in. We can post our monthly finished strips/squares/blocks and see what others are doing.

A great site to go to for block patterns is www.quilterscache.com.
Sooooooo - Who is with me on this?

Brilliant, Sara! It sounds lovely! I can picture it; but, I'm still not doing it justice.

That's a great idea, Sara. Please take a picture when you finish gluing the squares down with the aprons.

Hurray for me! (I do believe in tooting our own horns.)

I finished my squares for temperature quilt wall hanging. I'm dealing with MS fatigue and fog so it's impossible for me to piece the squares either by hand or machine. So I am pasting with white glue on the back of the picture hanging on my front porch. Just have to take it out and turn it around and put back into frame.

Once the squares are all glued in place I will see if it needs a border or not. Once it's in the frame I will glue on mini-aprons out of yellow, green, & orange prints and scatter around the squares; aprons will hang on a line of heavy twine.

When it's all done it will hang on my front porch between two white whicker rockers. After Jubilee I will take it out, turn it around, put back into frame and hang the sunflower picture back in it's place.

Bright yellow & orange again this week. I bought a Fat Quarter at Hobby Lobby ~ yellow & white all over prints. Now I have new fabric to play with so I should come up with an idea soon.

This week's square will be 2 colors - bright yellow & orange. Reminds me of a field of wildflowers. I'll see what I can come up with that will work off that idea.

Thanks Judith and Jessica - I'm a little late giving y'all a shout out.

Finally hit on a design for this week's square. Only two colors - light green & bright yellow. I find just 2 colors a little harder to work with than when I have 3 or 4. What I came up with is a bottom 4" square of yellow with scattered print and a top 4" square of green.

Cut out green over a twig of red berries and over a sprig of green leaves. Used pinking shears so I don't have the hem the cut outs. Will add buttons to both cutouts. I think it will turn out okay.

All my squares are so different they are interesting when put together.

Working on this weeks square today. 4" light green square with a circle of orange in the middle and a yellow chicken, cut from left over apron fabric, half on the circle and half on the bottom square. Chickens do get up with the sun.

Jessica, it's not too late if you want to do a lap quilt or wall hanging.

I started my wall hanging on Jan 1 and will finish it for the 2016 Jubilee weekend - May 8

I am planning on starting a new wall hanging on May 9 and have it fished by Sept for the FarmGirl Apple Festival.

Oct 1 I will decide if I will do a wall hanging for the remaining months.

I will hang them in picture frames on my front porch.

I pretty much bent all the rules but it works for me.

I'm so happy to see these blocks Sara and Tamara. Due to my BF's sister's passing and helping him in Michigan for 3 weeks, I've not gotten anything accomplished yet. I plan to use the weekly blocks, like Sara when I get going. Hope I can get back on track.

This week I have 3 colors to work with - bright yellow, light green, and orange. It'll be fun to see what I come up with for a design.

Yesterday I went to the Salvation Army and a new thrift store looking for a picture frame without glass. None to be had so the search continues for a fame. I don't need or want glass because it will be on the front porch and everyday the wind blows across it.

Tamara, it's beautiful. Love the colors and choice of fabrics.

I started my 6th square yesterday. I have three colors to work with - light & dark green and bright yellow. Using fabric with light and dark green pattern for square. Adding a bright yellow print yoyo with yellow button to lower right corner.

I need to find a picture frame to use and paint it the same color as my shutters - yellow. My favorite frame that I painted hangs in my kitchen. I painted a light green frame red - then yellow - distressed it with rough sanding paper so some of the red showed through. That's what I want to do to quilt frame.

So happy to add a light green block to my January strip. This is unheard of weather for upstate NY in January.

Will start 5th block today. Two colors ~ bright yellow & light green. At the quilt shop earlier this week I bought 10 fat quarters. One of the pieces is bright yellow & light green ~ looks like water colors were washed across the fabric. Perfect for this weeks block.

Will add a small square of yellow fabric with white daisy and put a yellow & white daisy button in center of flower. Will applicate the patch with green embroidery thread.

Sara, that plan of yours to display your quilts on your porch is adorable!

Annie, I admire your details on using both highs and lows as well as embellishments and/or printed fabric to indicate rain or snow. I'd love to have a plan that in depth, but I'm afraid this blanket would end up on my UFO list! I'm trying to keep this one simple so that I might be able to go back to old projects and finish them. It's so much fun starting new ones...
