Posted - Dec 12 2006 : 10:28:59 PM Everything in my grandmothers trunks smelled like moth balls, not a pleasant odor! I don't know what was in them because my sister lived close by at the time and she got them-my uncles were going to give everything to the Salvation Army when they put her in a nursing home. I do have some of her sewing...and she ''remodeled'' everything. No mistaking her stuff, less than beautiful is being polite! I have her sewing bag, though right now have no clue where it is or what all is in it. She was a character for sure. My dad's mother died in the 1918 flu epidemic when he was a toddler and no idea if anything of hers exists today. They lived in Wyoming and had very little anyway. My step dads mother did the most beautiful embroidery; you couldn't tell the front from back. I have the last pair of pillowcases she made, thanks to mother ''saving'' them, unused. I think this is why I buy so much needlework in the thrift shops, can't imagine a family not wanting them and I feel like I'm rescuing them...from the dealers if nothing else :) My MIL's trunk is something my daughter would love to have, from her and FIL's days with the 101 Ranch Show in the late 20's. It's a stand up wardrobe type. I do have most of her needlework patterns and such and she saved everything. Some wonderful memories she left for us. And great photos of them doing tricks on the horses as part of the show. Ronna Ronna |

Posted - Dec 12 2006 : 7:57:11 PM How neat is that? I know what you mean about the smell! I have my grandma's old trunk, and there are quilts in there that smell just like her house. I SO want to display them (they're torn and tattered though), but I'm afraid the smell will air out...so they've been in there, just like we found them 10 years ago. (Wow--I just had a "moment" when I had to sit and think about how long it's been and realized it's been 10 years since my precious grandma passed away...)

Posted - Dec 12 2006 : 6:37:56 PM Sounds like you'll get to have lots of fun. I'm sure you will enjoy even more because of the connection with your family history. "Conquest or defense" also speaks of the world in 1945. Enjoy :)

Posted - Dec 07 2006 : 04:02:45 AM Oh my!! We popped in at my daughter's last night to deliver a rocking chair and she gave me the apron book she found in my granny's trunk. It is in pristine condition! Not a tear! Here is a picture of the cover.
![](http://www.thesoapmaven.com/apronbook.jpg) The copyright date is 1945 from the American Thread Company. Inside the cover: Aprons for defence and Aprons for conquest! (Isnt that precious??!!) It reads: Here are aprons designed primarily to defend your dresses and aprons designed primarily for conquests. The former are as attractive as they are sensible; the latter are the merest whiffs of femininity ~demure and coquettish.
Isnt that just adorable??? I know I am getting a little carried away with it but it is just so special to me. AND best thing...it smells just like my granny's house. All I could do was hold it to my face and smile. There are aprons to be made my dear farmgirl friends!!
