Like as if I don't have enough projects on my sewing table...
Here is another one I just got caught up on...

Last year I was given a stack of pre-cut 10" squares... oh what to do with them... so on the table they sat until yesterday...

I made 6 hot pads...
I had some InsulBrite and cotton batting left from a few other projects,,,, or else this project would have been still sitting on the desk...
That being said.. I need to make the binding...so... yep, on the desk it will sit anyway... lol!
I started out with 12 sq of 10" fabric,,, cut out 1 each of the Insulbrite and batting for each pad...
stacked, stitched, folded, layered, stitched and now to Bind each pad... (Now I need to drive down the mountain to town and hit the fabric store).

Layer 1 pc fabric, Insulbrite, batting and (pre-fold sq into a triangle) triangle, layer the triangles, baste stitch down.. and bind.

lift up the corner and tuck the side of the last triangle under...

pin in place, then baste stitch down... I used the widest baste stitch and sowed slowly, carefully stretching the layers of fabric so as to not pucker.

These are perfect size for larger bowls/dishes of very hot or cold (ice cream)foods... My hubbie likes them because they are perfect size for his big paws when holding a bowl of chili and watching sports on T.V... about the only time I let him eat in front of the TV... lol!
Anyway, these are easy,, and if you don't have some Insulbrite,, you can d double/triple up on the cotton batting...
Oh and if you are not comfortable with machine basteing,,, you can always hand baste the layers together.

Gracie, you are the sewing queen! I love this idea, and think I'll try it and make some for my daughter's kitchen. Perhaps they'll inspire her to actually cook in there! :)

Happy Day!

Sara,,, I too luv the red/white fabric.. I was given a 1 1/2yd piece from a friend, left over from a sewing (curtains & upholstery) project.. I suggested she make toss-deco pillows... but she said she didn't need this remnant so now I get to have fun crafting projects with it.
I luv freebies :>)

Nice job Grace. Thanks for the how-to. Got to say the red & white one is my favorite. Always have liked red & white fabric & needlework.

These are so pretty and fun, Grace! Hotpads can get worn out quickly that it is fun to have a supply of new ones to have on hand. Plus, the color and print combinations are endless. Thanks for sharing how to make them too!

Oh Linda, I like your idea of the 2nd backing fabric to stitch and then turn inside out... no binding... you are right, it takes a bit of fussing... I will have to try your idea.
see, 2 heads are better than one! lol!

Thanks, Grace. That is an easy project. It's very similar to the way I make coasters, only smaller and with one more layer of fabric. Megan showed this in her article in the latest Sisterhood newsletter, and I've been making them for years.

When I make the potholders I make them slightly differently. I add a second piece of the backing fabric when layering (fabric right side down, insulbrite, batting, and fabric right side up), then layer the 4 folded triangles of fabric, and stitch around. I don't use seam binding (I've had one too many struggles with seam binding. LOL!) - I just stitch around them and turn them so the stitching is in side, then top stitch 1/4" around the edge. Sometimes the triangles tend to open in the center of the top, so I just stop stitch an "X" in the center to hold them down.

Just another way to make them.

Oh and I forgot to make mention,,, when layering, make sure that the bottom pc of fabric is right side out...
