Last December, we went to Iceland after Christmas for a week and had a wonderful time. They raise a lot of beautiful long haired sheep and make gorgeous woolen sweaters, hats, gloves, socks etc. There are also many stores that sell skeins of beautiful wool. As a beginner knitter, I was like a child lost in a candy shop! Here is my finished wool vest that I made from three colors. It was a simple pattern that I combined with a previous pattern and then made up a block color idea and went for it. Here is the result.

Icelandic wool is heavy and quite warm so there won't be many days here in Florida to wear this . I am pairing it with a cotton long sleeve shirt to hopefully make it so I don't roast when I wear it! With temperatures in the 90+ everyday and awful humidity, it seems like a far off distant idea that it will ever be cool enough come 2016 to even wear this thing. But I hope so!!

Winnie,
That is BEE-YOU-TEE-FUL! I envy those of you who knit and/or crochet because I don't. I just don't have time, right now, to learn another thing!

Thank-you all for your sweet comments! This sweater is truly a beginner level because it just uses the basic knit and purl stitches, and then adding or decreasing a stitch to make the shape. Plus, I made the decision to use size 10 needles so that the stitches would be loose. Plus, I like the look of the large stitch for this wooly yarn. I enjoyed making up the idea and putting it all together. Somehow the process of creating something out of what I have on hand always appeals to me and pushes me to put that thinking cap on and get creative.

Love your sweater Winnie! I can't believe you are a beginner! You did a beautiful job on it. I am looking forward to sweater season after a hot and sticky summer here in the Chicago area!

Keep knitting & sharing!

Winnie and Sara,

Come visit me in Minnesota anytime in the winter and wear them up here. It is said that here in Minnesota we have nine months of winter and three months of poor sledding.

That combo is so appealing. We're working on the Oct/Nov issue of the magazine right now and my daughter keeps saying that autumn is her favorite season because of things like cozy warm sweaters. I'll have to make sure she sees this!

Winnie, your sweater is beautiful. Well done. You do have an eye for color and pattern. The shirt is a perfect match.

I like sweaters, but like you I don't have many days to wear them, so I only have a few that I wear year after year. Light weight un-lined jackets are the way to go here. They're perfect for layering.
