was started in 2003 and is still a work in progress. It's really a Jacob's Ladder pattern and it will be really pretty when I finally get it finished. I am now quilting on the borders and when they are finished, all I will have to do is bind the edges.

Hi Julie..you must be such a sweet person to be a defender of polyester!! heehee. I bet those comforters were so welcomed by the orphans! I think our grandmas made them more like scrap quilts in squares with no rhyme or reason..at least mine did. It would have been nicer if they had a pattern, or even colors that looked nice together. I do remember that they made nice picnic blankets...thick enough to keep the stickers and pine needles from poking your legs!
Hey..you are new Julie...you ought to go to the Welcome wagon section and introduce yourself if you havn't already...so we can give you a big farmgirl welcome..you defender of polyester you!!

Hey, I must stand in defense of the ugly polyesters!!! I make comforters, not quilts, out of them and have made some lovely ones if I do say so myself!! I have to admit they are sent overseas for orphans but they are nice and warm. I had one where I made it in the Trip Around the World pattern and it was in yellows and reds and was very cheerful. Okay, there is my defense for the "uglies"!!

Hello everyone and a happy Thanksgiving day to those who are celebrating! I just finished my son's quilt, started in 2001. He was getting a little disappointed in me for not finishing it, so I told him he would have it by Christmas. I was able to give it to him last week! I did the same thing that Angela did, and finished it with machine quilting. I figured my son wasn't going to care wether or not is was done all by hand (over half) or not. I did pull out my nephew's quilt started around the same time. I have 8 more 12 inch blocks to quilt, the borders and then binding. Then my daughter's started in 1996. She is 13 now, I better get a move on. She actually jumped in to help finish it and has been quilting a block a night. (big sigh) and it is nice for me to see her interested in handquilting. I have told myself, no more fabric purchases UNTIL these are done...I will have to let you know if my resolve holds out!

My grandma had a tendency to make those awful polyester patchwork quilts sometimes too. I think because she wore THOSE pantsuits she wanted to use the scraps..she made all her own clothes....so she made quilts with them. yikes. She made some beautiful cotton quilts and crocheted wonderful afghans too..but those polyester ones were truly awful. I wonder what became of them.

Florence, LOL, I wouldn't consider a three year old quilt in progress never ending.... although my first three year project sure seemed like it. I'm sure my last quilt took 4 years.... The current one could be finished in a couple of months except I don't do any quilting unless I feel freed from everything else hanging over my head. Unless I threw it out, my worst UFO was a candlewick Christmas tree skirt... also an intricate and way too large counted cross stitch, circa 1980, with a lighthouse on rocks... I did like the picture, but got way out of count on the durn rocks and was undone.

I have one of my DH grandmother's quilt tops, and wish it was pretty... but since it isn't, I'll just keep it folded and displayed as is. My grandmother made those polyester knit patchwork pillows, Sunshine. Late 60's.... Fortunately, she made loads of crafts, and I do have beautiful things she made.

Just so every one know I have some of my husbands great grandmothers UFO's, quilts, that have to be finished we are looking at 70 + years undone. I have already finished 8 of these things and 4 more to go to bad those 4 have been sitting in my sewing stuff for the last 5 years. I did the 7 quilts finished and backed them and quilted them all in 2 months ( hand quilting) which burned me out of quitls for about 2 1/2 years. So it is hard to get back to those as I don't feel like burn out again. Some day, some of them are lovely some are just utilitarian. Most of those type ( utilitarian I have already done ) Althought there was 2 crazy patches and a sunbonnet sue in the first group. I think this geoup has a Irish chain and a butterfly applique.

Oh yes a quilt can be ugly down right hideous I have seen some made out of polyester knit like the stuff they used for womans pant suits in the 70's. Just the look and the feel of it was enough to make a person never want to make a quilt.

I am glad to say that I got my braided/woven rug finished and it looks great in the living room. But there is this persistant quilt that has been in the makings for, gotta be, 20 years now. One of my sons has laid claim on it, so now I have some real incentive to get done quilting it and get it out of here! It's my own design of Oak Leaves and Acorns.

Oh Bramble, can a quilt really be ugly? Perhaps in this case beauty will definitely be in the eyes of the beholder....hurry and get it done so you don't have to look at it any longer than you have to. You have my sympathy as its difficult to work on something you don't like.

I have a Lancaster Rose AND a Jacob's Ladder that haunt me as they are still unfinished! I guess it's because applique is tedious after awhile and I need to take a break. Jacob is for someone else who picked out the ugliest possible colors (brown, maroon, peach and turquoise...YUCK!) and I just HATE the way it is turning out! Not my choice or $$$ but my oh my...I hate to spend my time making an ugly quilt! It could win ugliest quilt contest...easily!!!

with a happy heart

I havev my grandmother's last quilt top that she pieced. I put batting and a back on it, and began quilting it 25 years ago! I hope I get it done because I may not have another 25 years!

Mine is a jean jacket I started Keltic Knot work on at 12 years old 14 years in the making and still working on it. I love the jacket still and I actually like the half indian ink half embroidsery it makes some of the zoomorphs stand out so I am not sure I will ever get it finished.

I thought I might be the only gal who does this. It is so nice to find kindred spirits in the UFO dept. This past Saturday I drug out a lap quilt I began with my first machine about 16 years ago . My "intention" (LOL) was to piece by machine and hand quilt. I got so frustrated with UFO's that I began machine quilting and am almost finished . Not as satisfing as finishing by hand but finished none the less!!

I have a cross-stitch of tulips in a basket that has been a WIP for going on 20 years now... every once in a while I get it out and finish another flower. I made some really good progress on it last winter, so time to think about getting it out once again and getting it finished. There's not that much left to do!

I have one that I havn't bound yet and have maybe 12 inches left to quilt that I started when my 26 year old son was a baby. Pretty pathetic huh?? I love it and it is folded and in the cupboard with my other quilts..but I never use it and havn't bothered to finish it. They way it is folded it isn't clear that is is a UFO. I was very young when I made it (21) and used some really funny combinations of fabrics..alot of scraps from my kids first curtains, cloths I made them and my maternity clothes..things like that..and I cut up old white sheets for background parts. I will have to take a picture of it. So I guess mine is a 26 year old work in progress..yours is just a baby Florence..haha. Usually I can manage to finish a project quicker. Now that I have a quilt frame again I will have to just get it done. It has alot of memories in it and I have moved it countless times now..haha. Be sure to post a pictures of your quilt..it sounds pretty!
