Has anyone else made an apron from this pattern of MJ's? I just finished my first one and posted a pic on my blog, under today's date. It's a fun apron to make, and they look so cheery!

...I (gulp) never knew you weren't supposed to sew over pins. Good thing my machine handles them well!

Since you asked, Suzyhomaker, I'll share!

I flat-felted the open seams where the body joins the ruffle, and where the two side pieces of the ruffle join, so there will not be any fraying. (I don't have a serger.) The pattern instructions don't address the seam finishes, perhaps so you can decide for yourself.

I would also recommend or remind the sewer to sew the ruffle to the body with the ruffle side up and to use alot of pins close together to accomodate flat sewing, without bunches, since there is so much fullness around. Although it is never advised, I leave the pins in and sew over them, as they create a "bridge" of sorts that the needle/presser foot can glide over and not create puckers. If you sew this way fairly slowly, while making sure the material is flat with both hands, you should not have any trouble with the pins.

I also used interfacing on the waistband for more stability. I'm going to try a layout/cutting adjustment on the ruffle the next time I try it, to perhaps avoid having to piece together the top side pieces of the ruffle. (It involves opening up the fabric, folding it opposite to the grain and cutting on the bias. I've done it with circle skirts before.) If I'm successful in that endeavor, I'll let you know!

Happy sewing!

I LOVE the apron and the colors . It is so very cheery. I wish I could see it modelled on someone.

What are your adjustments to the sewing of the pattern? I had a few myself from the Helen pattern. If we can share these tips, it makes the next sewer less frustrated if it moves along so smoothly.

Clare- Love those fabrics, that ought to cheer up a rainy day !
I like how the apron is sort of ruffly on the bottom, sort of fun and flirty while still being practical. Reminds me of all those different aprons Lucy used to wear on I Love Lucy. Nicely done, as always my friend!

Nope but I made the lollipop apron! I love it! I found this great vintage upholstery fabric for the body of the apron and some silk for the ruffle. Right now being as pregnant as I am the apron looks, well, hmmmmmmmm a little like a tongue on me! Its very funny! So....i'll have to wait a little while to really enjoy it. I love this pattern though. Just darling! Your colors are fabulous!
