I haven't visited Slater Mill since I was a little girl, but we went on our recent vacation and I was once again fascinated and enamored with the mill, the machinery, the factory and the historic home on the property - everything about the place. I would've tried to figure out how to stay a couple more weeks if I had known this was coming! LOL! I bet the designer salon and trunk show will be FABULOUS!!!

Further, they are offering upcoming classes:

FALL 2014 CLASSES
Handweaving * Chair Caning * Knitting
Millinery * Folk Music * Traditional Dance
Beginning October 7 & 8

And a Knitting weekend (Nicole - I'm thinking of you!!!):

7th Annual
KNITTING WEEKEND
Master classes * Vendor marketplace
Exclusive designer e-book!
January 16 - 18, 2015

I hope some of you will be able to attend some of these wonderful events! If so, please do post pictures and tell us all about it! I'll be with you in spirit!

Hugs and Happy Fall Y'All!

That's exactly how I feel about it, Marcy! I could imagine it all as well! You know, the men who do the tours are the brothers who were the demonologists initially featured on "Ghost Hunters" - Carl and Keith Johnson. They do a fabulous tour - we were extremely impressed. Carl was awesome giving the history and a hands-on tour of the mill itself. I learned more from him than I had ever learned before in all my years visiting there when I lived back home! He held our complete attention the entire time, and sure had us laughing as well! And what was REALLY exciting is that the day we were there, they actually opened up the water wheel! It was amazing to see it in action! I also loved the house... I can't for the life of me remember who lived there, but Keith did a wonderful tour, explaining every nook and cranny, tool and piece of furniture. They had a REAL tea brick sitting on the table... Don't know if you've ever seen or held one before, but they are amazing - I thought it was one of those ornate metal pieces that sit in the back of fireplaces to retain heat! It weighed a LOT, and was solid as a rock! And SO beautiful! I would've had a difficult time chipping away at it for tea, believe me! (They do have them available through the Plimoth Plantation Store's website, though - I may ask for one for Christmas!). Keith taught us all about the different plants in their garden and their uses. I just loved it! And my husband could not get enough of the machine shop - I thought we were going to lose them in there, for sure! LOL! Anyhow, both brothers did an excellent, excellent job, really bringing the entire place to life! It was actually the best tour of all the historic places we visited in New England. We never expected that of such a small museum!!! Fascinating place; fascinating history, fascinating teachers! Colleges would be so lucky to have professors like them!

I'm like you - I feel a bit like a fish out of water sometimes (literally - there's not an ocean in sight here!) because of my interests. It sure would be nice to have friends to share these things with, huh? Aren't we just so blessed to have our farmgirl sisters here on MJF??? What would we do without them?! Let's pray we never find out!! :)

Hugs and love -

Nini

Nini,

I love going to Slater Mill and would live there if it wasn't so far. You get a sense of the history of the place the second your feet hit the ground outside of the mill. Can't you just see the women and children working through the windows as you approach the building? Can't you feel the men in the so called 'men's building? I swear (yes, I have a very vivid imagination ) that I can just pick up and feel the history of that place every time I visit it.
I knew they were offering some kind of crafting classes but I wasn't sure what kind. Maybe I can get someone to go with me and I can learn something new. Unfortunately there really isn't anyone around here who likes the kind of things that I do. That's one of the reasons that I love MJF so much, there are so many wonderful ladies that love the same thing that I do and I feel at home here.
I hope you get the chance to visit the mill again soon.

hugs,
Marcy
