I'm using a satin brush-on varnish for finishing my craft projects. I was hesitant to use it but I've seen it recommended by other crafters because it gets into those "nooks n' crannies" that spray varnish might not reach. Well, as expected I'm starting to get little bits of fibre and such on my projects when sealing them. I'm not sure if it's from the brushes or the environment itself, but it's sort of a let down. I'm thinking about switching to spray, I've had mixed results with it because sometimes it spatters and looks milky/foggy.
So crafters, what do you prefer to use for finishing your projects? Any tips for using brush-on varnish? Or spray varnish?

Thanks for the responses!
I'm going to try the spray version again and hope I have better luck. I might also try using one of my uber expensive brushes with the bottle varnish (Liquitex is the only brand they carry in my city). I find the brush on varnish has a nicer thicker quality to it that looks really smooth. Hopefully one way or another I'll find a finish that works for me lol. |

You really need to have a GOOD brush when brushing Purdy (I think is the name) is the one I always use I haven't had any problems if I use that type. Also you need to gently stir the varnish every 10 min or so. A very light sanding will help with a tack cloth after to remove the dust.

Holly, I almost always use spray varnish... but after each use I clean off the little spray cap, and before starting I give a couple of sprays (in the air) to make sure it isn't gummed up.
and last but not least,,, don't get to close to the object you are spraying,,, usually 12 - 14" is a good distance and spray back & forth, don't 'aim' and stay to long in one area... better to apply several light coats then to have drips.
