Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to sew with my grandma's Singer treadle sewing machine. It has what I think is called a "bullet" shaped bobbin case, but I'm at a loss to figure out how to wind it. The spool is so tiny, seems like you'd need to fill it frequently? I only have one.
It would be so great if I can figure this out, since we live off the grid, but more importantly, just to have that connection with my G-ma who was constantly sewing on it. I'm so lucky to have it!

My treadle was on my to do list I have it threaded and bobbin wound. And have it sewing when I can get it to go the right direction but I have TERRIBLE tension in the bobbin. Big loops and birds nest. I will keep trying I love the sound it makes and the workout is great.

I love the old treadle machines. The one I have now belonged to my MIL and they motorized it a long time ago. It's still in the original cabinet so I'm going to remove the motor and put a belt on it. I have another old singer that was given to me and it was a treadle but motorized also and put into a different cabinet so it will not be as easy to convert back.

I have three treadles and two of them use these long bobbins,I had a heck of a time figuring out how to fill them but once I found an old reprint of the manual online and tried it I found it was pretty easy.
That's a great tutorial Kathy,I wish I had that when I was initially trying to figure it out,it took alot of head scratching and staring at the instructions and diagrams,I felt like a monkey staring at a math problem.
I love these old treadles,I have one that belonged to my Aunt (she learned to sew on it) and two that I have found at thrift stores,the last one coming with all sorts of accessories and even a button machine that I have yet to figure out how to use,I just haven't had occasion to pull it out and fool with it.

Great video Kathy! I just bought a treadle at auction last month. From what I could figure out it was from around 1916. I haven't even had time to clean it let alone figure out what bobbin it uses. This post made me go look and I guess I have a regular bobbin (round). I have an 1940's Singer that uses the bullet bobbin. Makes you wonder why they used different bobbins on different machines. The video Kathy posted was how I wound my 1940's Singer bobbin just motorized. Not sure how to wind the other style of bobbin on the treadle. Guess I'll have to do some research.

Here's a video on the long bobbins.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOu4-CG8RMU My machine did not have the little thing that goes back and forth to keep the thread even, I just used my finger to guide it. The machine I have now has the round bobbin.

I have a treadle with a bullet bobbin. I won't be of any help because after several years of having it I still haven't figured it out.
Hope someone can help out. I know there are many here with treadle machines.
